What is COMMUNICATION? The accurate transfer of information from a sender to a receiver

Communication is the process of sharing our ideas, thoughts, and feelings with other people and having those ideas, thoughts, and feelings understood by the people we are talking with. When we communicate, we speak, listen, and observe

Over 80% of our waking lives is spent sending and receiving information! What are some of the ways that you do this?

Effective communication depends on the accurate transmission of a message What are some barriers to accurate transmission? How have you had a communication problem or failure to communicate? Was there a miscommunication because of lack of understanding?

The Communication Process: The Elements in the Communication Process, at its simplest, are: –Sender –Message –Receiver –Feedback And the loop begins again! Message ReceiverFeedback Sender

The Communicator Effectiveness is determined by –Attitude –Selection of meaningful symbols –Depends on audience and environment –Also called ENCODING

Message A communication in writing, in speech, in symbols Verbal, Auditory, Visual

Receiver The person/machine/animal receiving the message Also a communicator by response/reception Receives with own bias (decoding) These are often barriersbarriers

Feedback Verbal or nonverbal reaction or response Allows communicator to adjust message and be more effective…perhaps resend Without feedback, there is no way of knowing if meaning has been shared

Internal Barriers –Fatigue –Poor listening skills –Attitude –Lack of interest –Fear –Mistrust –Past experiences –Negative attitude –Personal Problems –Emotions

External Barriers Noise Distractions not working Bad phone connection Time of day Jargon Environment Body language

Communications Technology The accurate transfer of information from a sender to a receiver using technology For example: Books, Using a computer, Listening to Music on your ipods, creating a photo collage

Prime Example! One Red Paperclip Sender – Kyle Macdonald Encoding? Message – Wants to trade up Channel? Receiver – The population at large Barriers? Feedback – Very positive…message obviously received as intended.
