2 What is COMMUNICATION? The accurate transfer of information from a sender to a receiver. When we communicate, we speak, listen, and observe

3 Did you know… We spend over 80% of our waking lives is spent sending and receiving information!

4 Types of Communication
Verbal (talking) Non-verbal (body language) Visual communication (visual aids, ex. maps) Written communication (pen & paper, texting)

5 Effective communication depends on the accurate transmission of a message
What are some barriers to accurate transmission? How have you had a communication problem or failure to communicate? Was there a miscommunication because of lack of understanding?

6 The Communication Process:
The Elements in the Communication Process, at its simplest, are: Sender Message Receiver Feedback And the loop begins again!

7 Sender The Communicator Effectiveness is determined by Attitude
Selection of meaningful symbols Depends on audience and environment

8 Message A communication in writing, in speech, in symbols
Message is either verbal, auditory, or visual

9 Receiver The person/machine/animal receiving the message
Also a communicator if they respond.

10 Feedback Verbal or nonverbal reaction or response
Allows communicator to adjust message and be more effective if needed. Without feedback, there is no way of knowing if communication took place.

11 Communication Barriers
Communication Barriers are the various obstacles and hurdles which may arise during communication and lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations by the receiver.

12 Types of Barriers Internal External
physiological or psychological in nature. External outside the body, in surrounding environment.

13 Examples of Internal Barriers
Fatigue Poor listening skills Attitude Lack of interest Fear Mistrust Past experiences Negative attitude Personal Problems Emotions

Noise Distractions not working Bad phone connection Time of day Jargon Environment Body language
