Ch 13 The Endocrine System

Terms  Adrenal glands (2)- adren/o- Regulates electrolyte levels, infuences metabolism, and responds to stress.  Gonads- Male testicles (2) Female ovaries (2) gonad/o- Regulates development and maintence of secondary sex characteristics.  Pancreatic islets- pancreat/o- Controls blood sugar levels and glucose metabolism.  Parathyroid glands (4)- parathyroid/o- Regulates calcium levels throughout the body.

More Terms  Pineal gland (1)- pineal/o- Influences the sleep-wakefullness cycle.  Pituitary gland (1)- pituit/o, pituitar/o- Controls the activity of the other endocrine glands.  Thymus (1)- thym/o- Plays a major role in the immune reaction.  Thyroid gland (1)- thyr/o, thyroid/o- Stimulates metabolism, growth, and activity of the nervous system.

Ch 13 Terms  -dipsia thirst  -ism condition, state of  -necrosis tissue death  anti- against  poly- many  gonad/o gonad, sex glands  pancreat/o pancreas  parathyroid/o parathyroid glands  pineal/o pineal gland  pituitar/o pituitary gland

Words  Polydipsia> excessive thirst  Cretinism> a congenital lack of thyroid condition  Fat necrosis> leads to tissue death of the pancreas  Antithyroid drug> is a medication administered to slow the ability of the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones  Gonadotropic hormone> hormones that stimulate the gonads  Pancreatitis> inflammation of the pancreas  Parathyroidectomy> surgical removal of one or more of the parathyroid glands  Pinealopathy> any disorder of the the pineal gland  Pituitarism> Any disorder of the pituitary function
