4 System made up of….. Endocrine Glands – produce and release chemical substances directly into the blood stream. Endocrine Glands – produce and release chemical substances directly into the blood stream. Hormones – Produced by the endocrine glands, they act as chemical messengers in the body. Hormones – Produced by the endocrine glands, they act as chemical messengers in the body. –Once released into the bloodstream, they travel to other parts of the body where they stimulate a response.

5 System of checks and balances? When working properly, hormones from one gland send chemical signals to another gland, which responds by regulating the chemicals of the first gland When working properly, hormones from one gland send chemical signals to another gland, which responds by regulating the chemicals of the first gland Each hormone is kept in check by the production of another hormone or series of hormones. Each hormone is kept in check by the production of another hormone or series of hormones.

6 Endocrine Glands Pituitary Gland – Small gland at base of brain. Controls many activities such as; growth rate, metabolism, other glands in the body, and reproduction. Hypothalamus – in brain, controls the pituitary gland, body temperature, use of water, and blood pressure. 10 More Glands!!! Adrenal glands – Controlled by the pituitary and hypothalamus, found on both sides of your body above the kidneys. Produce hormones that affect kidneys, metabolism and response to stressful situations. 17 Reproduction and the Endocrine System Ovaries – Produces Estrogen and Progesterone Ovaries – Produces Estrogen and Progesterone Testes – Produce testosterone Testes – Produce testosterone  Think of your own picture!

18 More Repro. Hormones Luteinizing Hormone (LH)– Luteinizing Hormone (LH)– Males – stimulates sperm and testosterone production Males – stimulates sperm and testosterone production Females – stimulates ovulation, maturation of egg cell, and progesterone production Females – stimulates ovulation, maturation of egg cell, and progesterone production - Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) - Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Males – Stimulates sperm production Males – Stimulates sperm production Females – Stimulates maturation of egg cell in ovary and estrogen production. Females – Stimulates maturation of egg cell in ovary and estrogen production.
