INTRODUCTION Student-driven process Preparation & organization are keys Utilize technology and books BHS Guidance page Naviance account College websites Twitter/other social Follow colleges to which student is applying

Topics of Discussion Types of Admissions Policies What will be in the college application folder? Obtaining applications Completing applications Sending test scores Who does what to get the application completed and sent? Schedule for submitting applications Requesting transcripts Letters of Recommendation Senior grades Naviance account

Types of Admission Regular Decision Rolling Admissions Early Action Restrictive Single-choice Early Decision Priority/preferred

6 What will be in your student’s admission file? Student-completed application Standardized test scores Transcript (academic record) Recommendations from teachers and counselor BHS Profile

Obtaining applications Most schools prefer that you apply online –Common Application Complete all info for Common App and member-specific questions –Non Common App found on college website under “Admission” For all applications, make sure you read and follow ALL directions!

Completing Applications FERPA –on Common App –allows BHS to send materials Follow directions on ALL applications Meet deadlines (they are NOT suggested dates) Allow time for writing & reviewing Be aware of writing supplements & “member questions” Save/print/photocopy completed applications

Schedule for submitting applications If the application deadline isthen transcript/application request must be submitted to Guidance by November 1, 2015October 19, 2015 November 15, 2015October 29, 2015 December 1, 2015November 13, 2015 December 15, 2015December 1, 2015 January 1, 2016December 10, 2015 January 15, 2016December 22, 2015 February 1, 2016January 15, 2016

Student Piece Turn in completed documents to counselor Transcript release form Student Questionnaire (“Brag Sheet”) Parent “brag sheet” – on Naviance Final college list – on Naviance Complete applications online Request transcripts through Naviance Counselors will be going into Senior English classes to walk students through this process Submit $2 per transcript requested Request SAT/ACT scores be sent to colleges – This MUST be done through the testing companies:

ACTUALLY GETTING THE APPLICATION OUT OF YOUR HANDS! Do your part (biographical forms, personal statements, and essays – all on the online applications) and submit directly to schools Send standardized test scores Request transcripts on Naviance Pay $2 for each “packet” that BHS sends out for you - don’t worry about postage, etc., as we use a special application envelope At that point, Guidance will do its part!

Counselor’s Part Official transcript Counselor Recommendation School profile School report form

Letters of Recommendation Each school has a policy on the number of letters required –For Common App schools, this is found under “My Colleges”  “Recommenders and FERPA” Request recommendations through Family Connection (after speaking with the teachers) All schools that accept electronic submissions can be completed through Naviance ( OR ) For all other schools ( ), provide teachers with: An envelope addressed to college’s admissions office The school’s teacher form, if applicable BHS return address and proper postage List of due dates and time to write the letters Be sure to thank the teacher for taking the time to provide this extra service!

1 st marking period grades We suggest sending 1 st marking period grades as a way for students to make direct contact/keep colleges updated Many schools do not specifically request 1 st MP grades, so Guidance DOES NOT send them automatically If colleges ask students to have official 1 st MP grades sent by counselor, student MUST come and request them directly from his/her counselor

1 st semester grades No request needed Automatically sent in mid-February after grades are posted Sent to all colleges for which a student has requested a transcript

Sending test scores Your transcript does NOT include any standardized test scores. The student is responsible for having scores sent directly to colleges and universities. –SAT and SAT Subject Tests: –ACT: –AP:

Naviance bernardshttp:// bernards Naviance “Using Family Connection” PowerPoint available on BHS Guidance page For any specific questions, please reach out to your student’s counselor
