1 THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS

2 There are three types of College Applications
Common Application On-Line Application (found on the college’s website) Paper Students will need to follow the same process for three types of applications using our new Naviance on-line program.

3 What you are going to need as you apply to college:
Students are responsible for….. SHS is responsible for…. Students will need to complete their applications. Students will need to complete a release of records (available in the counseling office). Students will need to complete a green tracking sheet for each college that they apply to (available in the counseling office). Students will need select the colleges that they are applying to and request transcripts through their Naviance account. Students will need to request that their Midyear Grades be sent to their colleges from the Counseling office secretaries. Students should have a resume….. which can be created in their Naviance account. Students will need to request letters of recommendation from teachers through Naviance. SHS will send official transcript to the college in which the student is applying. SHS will send unofficial SAT/ACT/ AP scores when requested by the student. SHS will send the school profile to the college in which the student is applying. SHS will forward a completed secondary school report/counselor report to the college in which the student is applying. SHS will send a counselor letter of recommendation if requested or required. SHS will send Midyear grades upon request.

4 How to use Naviance to request your transcript
In Family Connection, click on Colleges on top right-hand side of the screen. 2. Click on “Colleges I’m applying to”.

7 4. Click on “lookup” to add a college to your list.

8 5. Search for the college by name or browse through the list of colleges our students have applied to in the past. This is where you can also find NCAA.

11 8. Click “request transcript”.
9. Continue adding additional schools by clicking “lookup”. Make sure you have clicked off the box “I have submitted my application.” When you are finished adding colleges, click “Add Colleges”.

12 9. You can track when records have been submitted by our counseling office by clicking on “Colleges I’m Applying To” under the “Colleges” tab.

13 Requesting a Recommendation Letter through Naviance
Make sure your resume in Naviance is up to date and accurate. Teachers will use this information to help write their recommendation. If you are using the Common Application please be sure the colleges are in your list on the application. Teachers will not be able to submit letters if this step in not complete. If your college does not accept on-line applications please provide your teachers will pre-addressed/stamped envelopes for them to be sent. A request in Naviance does not replace a face to face conversation with a teacher. We highly recommend you ask teachers in person first before requesting a recommendation letter through Naviance.

Write a personal note to the teacher you are requesting a letter from in the space provided.

Click on Update Requests. An will be sent to your teachers with your request

17 College Application Quick Start
1. Complete your application. 2. Log into Naviance to request your transcript. 3. Stop into the counseling office to pick up the following: *Record Release Form: must be signed by you and your parent *Green Tracking Form for each college in which you are applying 4. Return completed Green Tracking Form and Record Release Form to Counseling 10 school days prior to application deadline. 5. Log on to Naviance to check your application’s status. See your counselor with any questions!!
