Managing the College Application Process

2 Your Transcript Review your profile (unofficial transcript) to make sure it is accurate. Report any errors to your counselor by Wednesday, September 20, 2018. Transcripts are sent through the Registrar’s Office electronically with your letters of recommendation Mid-year grade reports are sent in February to all schools to which you have applied

3 Obtaining College Applications
Common Application – Applications from college websites CUNY and Nassau Community College applications are available in the guidance office SUNY schools = use the Common Application Look for on-site admissions information bulletins in the Guidance office for additional application opportunities

4 Early Decision and Early Action
What is the difference between early decision and early action? How many schools can you apply to early decision? Things to keep in mind: Competing against a smaller applicant pool Can be more competitive Some schools can defer you to their regular applicant pool Review college web sites for deadlines Always remember to read everything thoroughly before signing!

5 The College Essay Check college application for essay topics
Begin a draft of your essay PROOFREAD all of your work Ask an English teacher to review your essay Submit it with your application (electronic upload)

6 Naviance / Family Connections – Submitting your Applications
The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District sends transcripts, recommendations, and school forms electronically. As a result, we need you to follow these instructions carefully so that ALL of the colleges you are applying to receive your transcript and secondary school report in a timely manner.

7 Naviance / Family Connection
Make sure you have the Naviance / Family Connection username and password that you created– if you don’t, see your counselor Sign into Family Connection (link is on our web site) and go to the Colleges Tab

Click on Colleges I am Applying to and create your list of colleges. Add all colleges that you are applying to!

10 Letters of Recommendation
Two Teachers Request a letter by speaking personally to each teacher and providing them with a current Activity Sheet or Resume Additionally, you MUST electronically request a letter from each teacher through Naviance / Family Connection Your School Counselor will write a letter as long as : You provide your Counselor with your brag sheet Your parent provides your Counselor with the parent brag sheet You provide your Counselor with your Activity Sheet/Resume

Go to Naviance Family Connection and Sign in On the Welcome Screen, click Colleges I’m Applying to

Click under Teacher Recommendation Click on Add/Cancel Requests

13 Matching your Common Application w/ your Naviance Family Connection Account
If you are using the Common Application to apply to colleges you MUST link your Common Application to your Naviance account through Naviance. Go to Colleges I’m Applying to and follow the directions for linking your account. Please note you can only link your account once!

After reading the directions and completing steps 1 and 2, Enter the address and that you used to log into the Common Application and your birthday in the space provided and click “Match.”

16 Important Reminders It is the student’s responsibility to:
Sign the FERPA agreement online on the Common App (look on the left navigation bar) Submit a transcript request form for each college that he/she is applying to two weeks before the application deadline. Forms may be obtained in the Registar’s office. (Pink = Early Action; Green=Regular Admissions) Send his/her SAT/ACT scores to directly to each college from the testing agency Send a paper copy or a copy of his/her Activity Sheet or Resume to any college admissions office that he/she may want to apply to. This is not sent by your Counselor or Registrar Always use an appropriate address when submitting correspondence to colleges that you are applying to

College Fairs: - Sunday, Sept. 16th, SUNY Old Westbury. - Monday, Oct. 1st, District College Fair and Financial Aid Night at JFK 6:30 pm Individual College visits by admissions representatives at Calhoun High School. (Check your Naviance Family Connection Inbox) Open Houses at individual colleges (See Bulletin Board outside of the Guidance office) Upcoming SAT/ACT Registration Deadlines: - For October SAT: Sept. 7th - For October ACT: Sept. 21st - For November SAT: Oct. 5th
