What is Dual Enrollment?

Dual Enrollment courses are offered to Bedford County high school students through Central Virginia Community College. A student may attend Dual Enrollment courses at any CVCC campus location or at JFHS (College English and/or College Math). Dual Enrollment courses are designed to allow students to earn high school credit to meet graduation requirements while simultaneously earning college credit. The college credits earned will satisfy a portion of the requirements for an Associate of Arts and/or Sciences Degree at CVCC and are normally transferable to four-year colleges and universities (with a grade of “C” or better) toward a baccalaureate degree. However, no guarantee can be made to students regarding transferability to all colleges and universities.

Community college occupational/technical course credits earned are applicable to specific curricula and are intended to prepare students for employment in those areas. (Welding, HVAC, Machinist, Culinary) However, no financial aid is available for high school students. Bedford One Program - Business Tours for Seniors. VA Wizard to Seniors and discussing Careers in September.

Dual Enrollment classes are governed by a joint agreement with Bedford County Public Schools policies and CVCC’s policies, including, but not limited to, attendance, grading, calendar, drop/add periods, admissions, placement testing and prerequisites and privacy laws (FERPA laws do not allow CVCC to share student information with parent(s), regardless of the student’s age).

Dual enrollment is restricted to high school juniors and seniors and home school students studying at the high school junior or senior levels. Because admitting freshmen and sophomores is considered exceptional, the college ready status of each prospective freshman and sophomore student will be treated on a case-by-case basis. Formal approval by the College Vice President is required for admitting freshmen or sophomores and any student under the age of 16. Successful placement test scores must be presented to Vice President for consideration.

What You Need to Know? Dual Enrollment courses are COLLEGE LEVEL so the student should be academically strong and prepared to work. 2 “3 credit classes” = 1 high school credit 2 “3 credit CORE Courses” are weighted on a 5 point scale. 2 “3 credit Elective Courses” are weighted on a 4.5 point scale.
