3 Our Purpose At Walker Valley we believe that we are to work in cooperation with the student and the parent in order to form a partnership that will benefit each student. Our goal is to see each student graduate from Walker Valley with a solid educational foundation under their feet.

4 Tennessee Honors Diploma How to Graduate with an Honors Diploma: Students who score at or above all of the subject area readiness benchmarks on the ACT (or equivalent score on the SAT) will graduate with honors. ACT College Readiness Benchmark Scores: English – 18 Mathematics – 22 Reading – 21 Science – 24 College Readiness Benchmark Scores for the ACT represent median test scores that are predictive of student success in relevant college courses. “Success” is defined as a 50 percent or higher probability of earning a B or higher in the corresponding college course or courses.

5 Diploma of Distinction Graduating with Distinction Tennessee graduates who maintain a B average and complete an additional approved credential will graduate with distinction. Approved credentials include: Nationally recognized industry certification Tennessee Governor's School All State musical organization National Merit finalist or semi-finalist A composite score of 31 or higher on the ACT A core of 3 or higher on two AP exams International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 12 or more hours of transcripted post-secondary credit

6 Circle of Champions Steps for applying: www.walkervalleyhigh.com Students should apply to Circle of Champions EACH Year. Applications should be completed online (March 22 is the absolute deadline) www.walkervalley high.com or thespill.org Students MUST turn in their Service Hour Forms to Guidance by March 22. NO EXCEPTIONS.

7 Tennessee Scholars *If a student is in Tennessee Scholars, they need to make sure that they take a math beyond Bridge Math. If they make below a 19 on the ACT in Math, they will be recommended to take Bridge Math. They do not have to, but if they are weak in Math, they may want to take Bridge Math 1 st semester to strengthen math skills and then take Statistics 2 nd semester.

8 Credit Recovery At this time your child should have at least 10 - 12 credits. If they have less than this they put themselves in danger of not being able to graduate on time with their class. Students need to complete Credit Recovery NOW*please make sure your student has ALL Credit Recovery classes completed before senior year Credit Recovery is available only in the core areas. Credit Recovery meets Tuesday – Thursday 7:15 – 8:10 Monday - Thursday After School 3:35 – 4:30 Monday/Tuesday/Thursday at 1:30 by signing up with Ms. Howard

9 What To Do Your child should check with their counselor to check their credit situation. They should check to see if there is an opportunity for Credit Recovery if they need it. If this is not an option they should be checking for opportunities to make up the class. Remember there are 28 credits required to graduate We have begun 10 th grade registration for the junior year. Students should be bringing home registration forms soon.

10 Registration for the Junior Year Required English Algebra II or Pre-Calculus* American History Biology 4 Electives * if the students has taken Algebra II

11 AP Advanced Placement Opportunities AP CLASSES World History U.S. Government* American History Biology* Language and Composition Literature and Composition * U.S. Government/Biology I are prerequisites A score of 3,4,or 5 on the test normally transmits into college credit – check with the school you will attend

12 Dual Enrollment The ACT is required to enroll A score of 19 is required on the composite and the subject area you wish to enroll in A GPA of 3.0 Sign up for the JUNE test www.act.orgwww.act.org Scores must be turned in to the Guidance Office Check with the school you will attend after high school to be certain the credit will transfer

13 Work Based Learning Three blocks maximum over the junior and senior years Grade comes from a co-existing class CANNOT be behind in credits

14 What is our purpose? We want to give your child every opportunity to graduate. We want to communicate with you on a regular basis. Progress Reports go out every three weeks. Please watch our website www.walkervalleyhigh.comwww.walkervalleyhigh.com daily for announcements etc.

15 Now is the Time Begin looking at college choices based on what your child wishes to major in – look for the best program for them. Begin looking at information the college requires and when it is due so it will not slip up on you. Be academically prepared. Look at the future, check out the career your child is interested in and find out what it takes to for that to be a career choice. In order to help you keep up we established a Parent Portal for you to check grades and attendance. 18 Important Things To Remember  Be involved with their registration for their senior year, their choice of college, their choice of career and their choice of friends.  Keep up with their grades on the Parent Portal  Do not let students think of taking their senior year off, challenge them to work hard.  Keep in touch with their teachers.  Watch our website, there is important information on there for you.
