Welcome to 2 nd Grade Curriculum Night

Teachers Mrs. Gode Mrs. Rettig Ms. Price Mrs. Shumard Mrs. Snodgrass

Curriculum The curriculum is based in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) which are the state mandated standards. The 2nd Grade TEKS can be downloaded from the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) website. Each teacher may then add her own individuality and creativity to the lessons that teach these mandated skills.

Reading Kindergarten and 1st Grade focuses primarily on “learning to read”. 2nd Grade continues learning to read, but also begins to focus on “reading to learn” (building comprehension skills). We will work on reading in a variety of ways. Whole class instruction Guided reading groups Partner reading Fluency practice Children should be reading 20 minutes aloud to you every night. A reading log and activity will be due every other Monday. The state of Texas states that a student should be reading 90 wpm by the end of 2nd grade.

Spelling The Second grade spelling will guided by the Second grade TEKS and a district created curriculum. The Spelling tests will be given on Friday and will include 15 spelling words and dictation sentences. A list of spelling practice ideas will be given once a month.

Language Basic grammar parts of speech (noun, verb, etc.) types of sentences (statement, question, etc.) subject and predicate of a sentence other skills to promote grammatically correct writing and speaking Writing writing a good expanded sentence developing a good paragraph the writing process –pre-write –drafting –revising –editing –publishing journal writing

Math The curriculum is based on the district’s scope and sequence. We primarily use Investigations and supplement with various other resources. Basic addition and subtraction facts form the foundation for progressing in math! Mastering addition and subtraction facts is a must before entering 3 rd Grade! Flashcards are a great way to practice. They can be purchased anywhere or made for practice at home. Homework will be given twice a week for math.

Science & Social Studies Science and Social Studies consist of content, hands on activities, and various experiments and projects. Science We will do many hands on experiments and science notebooking. Curriculum is TEKS based and follows the district’s scope and sequence. Social Studies It will be integrated into our reading time. Curriculum is TEKS based. Social skills (Second Step program)

SPUR Folder Students use this folder to help them become more responsible. Important papers and homework are sent and returned in this folder. Daily behavior is recorded in this folder. Please don’t forget to review your child’s folder daily and check their homework for accuracy. This folder can be a great communicator between parent, teacher, and school.

Late Work AND Unfinished Assignments If a student is absent, he or she will have ample time to complete the missed assignments (as stated in the district guidelines). If an assignment is not completed during the day, your child may be sent to a study hall during recess in order to complete it. ** Discretion of the teacher ** Redo Papers Any paper that receives a grade below a 70 will be redone by the student at school, usually with the direction of the teacher.

Dismissal Procedures School is officially over at 3:25. Children will be accounted for by their color coded dismissal cards. Each child will give the teacher on duty his/her card as he/she leaves the school. If your child will be leaving school differently than normal, please call or send a note (preferably prior to 2:25).
