4 Travel Folders  Please check your child’s travel folder each day  Please clean out your child’s travel folder each day  Make sure travel folders are returned to school each day  Send notes, lunch money, and forms in your child’s travel folder

5 Lunch and Snack  If your child buys lunch you can purchase it online, or you can send money in an envelope labeled with your child’s first and last name, grade, and teacher  If your child packs lunch, please pack it separately from their snack. Each bag should be labeled with their first and last name  Please send a healthy snack to school with your child each day. A list of approved healthy snacks can be found on the school website

6 Homework  Math homework will be given Monday – Thursday  Other homework will be sent home on Monday in the Friday Folder and will be due on Friday  Friday folder will contain reading logs, fluency homework, word study tic-tac-toe, and a writing prompt  Check your child’s planner or the homework board each day  Homework reinforces skills learned in class

7 Fluency Homework  Your child will bring home one sheet of fluency practice each week.  Each day your child will read the story and answer the day’s question.  Then you will time your child reading the story aloud for 1 minute. Record the total words and subtract the errors to find words correct per minute.  Read the parent tips each week for more ways to support your student.

10 Writing Homework  Writing homework will be in the Friday Folder  A prompt will be glued in student’s green writing journals  Students will write at least one page answering the prompt  Students are encouraged to plan their writing, revise and edit their writing, and add a sketch to their writing  Writing homework is due Friday

11 Behavior  Positive reinforcement is used to encourage good choices  Students earn play nickels when they make good choices which can be used for prizes  If a student does not make a good choice they confer privately with the teacher. If their behavior does not improve, a think sheet is sent home

12 Scholastic Book Orders  Book orders are optional, but offer grade level appropriate books at reasonable prices  Book orders earn us points to get books for our class library  Book orders will be sent home the first Monday of each month and will be due that Friday  Send in completed order forms along with the payment in an envelope labeled with your child’s name (checks are preferred)  If you wish to order online, our class code is: HJ4JK

13 Birthday Parties  Sending food is not necessary, but if you wish to send a snack, it must be something from the approved healthy snack list  You do not have to send goody bags, but if you would like to, they must be filled with educational items  We have 20 students in our class, 10 girls and 10 boys

15 Schedule  We have double periods of Reading and Writing Workshop and Math  We will teach Social Studies and Science in units  Other subjects we have are: Word Study, Family Life, and Handwriting

16 Special Subjects  Monday – Art  Tuesday – Gym – wear sneakers  Wednesday – Music  Thursday – Media – return book  Friday – Gym – wear sneakers

17 Reading Workshop  Children learn strategies that enable them to become better readers  Children learn skills that help them comprehend what they read  Children listen to books from a variety of genres  Children have independent reading time each day when they will read a book at their level

18 Writing Workshop  Children learn skills and strategies to help them become better writers  Children write about topics they are passionate about  Children learn about various genres of writing  Children learn to stretch out their writing  Children learn about the publishing process

19 Math  We use a program called Go Math  Go Math is aligned with the NJCCCS  Children learn new skills in a variety of ways such as using manipulatives, playing games, and working in math centers  Children work in small groups to review skills depending on their academic needs

20 Social Studies and Science  In Social Studies students learn about the following concepts: communities, holidays, U.S. government, and U.S. history  In Science students learn about the following concepts: plants and animals, forces and motion, and physical and chemical changes  Students participate in hands-on science experiments

21 Word Study  Word Study takes the place of a traditional spelling program  Instead of memorizing words, students learn spelling patterns that they can apply when they read and write

22 Family Life  Students learn about conflict resolution. They learn how to use “I Messages” and the Work- it-Out Area  Students learn the importance of respect and responsibility  Students learn about healthy choices  Students learn about the role of families and how families are alike and different

23 Handwriting  In handwriting students practice proper posture and pencil grip and learn to form their letters properly to enable them to always use their best handwriting

24 Closing  My job is to make sure your child is reaching their potential  I do this by:  Creating meaningful and engaging lessons  Differentiating my instruction  Fostering your child’s social, emotional, and academic needs
