Chapter 1: Living a Healthy Life Intro to Health Chapter 1: Living a Healthy Life

What is Health? The combination of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being The state of being free from illness or injury Striving to be the best you can be at any given time

Wellness An overall state of well-being, or total health Achieving wellness requires an ongoing, lifelong commitment to physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social health

The Health Continuum *Health can be measured on a sliding scale, many fall just below the wellness point High Level of Health Premature Death

Promoting Your Health Make responsible decisions about health and develop good healthy habits LIFESTYLE FACTORS (habits) – factors that affect: Overall health Happiness Longevity – how long you live Prevention – practicing health & safety habits to remain free of disease & injury. Ex: wearing sunscreen to protect skin from cancer

10 Lifestyle Factors (habits) 8-10 hours a sleep Healthy breakfast! Variety of nutritious foods Physically active for at least 20 min/day Maintain healthy weight Avoid tobacco, alcohol, & drugs Abstain from sex before marriage Manage stress Positive relationships Be safe to prevent injuries
