2 HEALTH SKILLS  or life skills, specific tools and strategies that help you maintain, protect, and improve all aspects of your health.  What are some examples of this in your every day life?

3 INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION  exchange of thoughts, feelings, and beliefs between 2 or more people.

4 EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS  Effective Communication Skills (for building and maintaining healthy relationships):  What does this look like to you?  Give some examples of when you have some communication that has been ineffective?

5 EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION  Clearly say what you mean. Use “I” messages to state your position. Ex: “I am hurt that you went without me.”  Pay attention to how you say something. Use respectful tone. 8  Be a good listener. Avoid interrupting the speaker, and show that you are listening by nodding or asking appropriate questions.

9 REFUSAL SKILLS  communication strategies that can help you say no when you are urged to take part in behaviors that are unsafe or unhealthful or that go against your values.

10 REFUSAL STRATEGIES  Say NO in a firm voice. Do this calmly and clearly. Use expressions such as “I’d rather not”  Explain why. State your feelings and tell them that the suggested activity goes against your values.

11 REFUSAL STRATEGIES  Suggest alternatives.  Use appropriate body language. Make it clear that you don’t intend to change your mind. Look directly in their eyes.  Leave if necessary. If they continue to pressure you or won’t take no for answer, just walk away.

12 CONFLICT RESOLUTION  process of ending a conflict through cooperation and problem solving.  The key is respecting others’ rights and your own.  Willingness to compromise to achieve resolution.

13 STEPS TO TAKE WHEN DEALING WITH A CONFLICT:  Take time to calm down and think through the situation  When discussing conflict, speak calmly and listen attentively, asking questions when appropriate.  Use polite tone and try to brainstorm solutions where no one loses respect. Work to resolve conflict peacefully.

15 ANALYZING INFLUENCES  Internal Influences- include knowledge, values, likes, dislikes, and desires, are based on your experiences and your perspective on life.  External Influences- come from outside sources, include your family, friends, peers, environment, culture, laws, and media  What are some examples of these in your life?

16 RESPONSIBLE DECISIONS AND SETTING GOALS  Decision-making skills: steps that enable you to make a healthful decision   Step 1: State the Situation  Step 2: List the options  Step 3: Weigh the outcomes  H (Healthful)  E (Ethical)  L (Legal)  P (Parent Approval)  Step 4: Consider your values (ideas, beliefs, and attitudes about what is important that help guide how you live.)  Step 5: Make a decision and act on it  Step 6: Evaluate your decision

17 TYPES OF GOALS:  Short-term goal: goal that you can reach in short period of time How long do you think a short- term goal is?  Long-term Goal: goal that you can reach over an extended period of time  How long do you think a long-term goal is?

18 ACHIEVING YOUR GOALS  Set specific, realistic goal, and write it down. Should be positive in order to motivate  List the steps you will take to reach your goal. Look for ways to breaker larger goals into smaller short-term goals.  Identify sources of help and support. Include family, friends, neighbors, peers, teachers, etc.  Set a reasonable time frame for reaching goal. Write it down  Evaluate your progress with checkpoints. Periodically check progress and make adjustments.  Reward yourself for achieving goal.

19 BUILDING CHARACTER  Character: distinctive qualities that can describe how a person thinks, feels, and behaves.  Good Character- outward expression of inner values. Demonstrates core ethical values like responsibility, honesty, integrity, and respect.

20 TRAITS OF GOOD CHARACTER  Trustworthiness : honest, loyal, and reliable. “You will do what you will say you’ll do”, have the courage to do what is right, don’t lie, cheat or steal.  Respect : Considerate of others, tolerate of differences, use good manners, treat people and their property with care.  Responsibility : using self-control—think before you act, consider the consequences, accountable for your choices/decisions, & don’t blame others for YOUR actions. “Responsible people try to do their best and they persevere even when things don’t go as planned”.

21 TRAITS OF GOOD CHARACTER  Fairness : play by the rules, take turns, share, open-minded, listen to others, don’t try to take advantage of others and don’t assign blame to others.  Caring : kind, compassionate, express gratitude, be forgiving, and help others in need.  Citizenship : advocate for safe and healthy school & community, obeys laws/rules, respects authority, & cooperates with others.

22 HOW TO DEVELOP YOUR CHARACTER  Stand up for your beliefs  Learn from others who demonstrate good character traits. Ask for good advice  Join volunteer groups in school or community and forming friendships with people who exhibit core ethical values.

23 HOW TO DEMONSTRATE GOOD CHARACTER  Make a difference at home- demo that you are trustworthy and reliable by carrying out your responsibilities.  Make a difference at school- observe school rules, show respect for teachers/students, join clubs and volunteer  Make a difference in community- be a good citizen by obeying laws, respecting needs of others, tolerant of differences, be a good person/role model, and volunteer in the community.
