Heart disease and cancer just run in some families; there’s nothing that can prevent it. Because of the advances in medicine and technology, today’s teens are much healthier than teens were in the 20th century.

3 Components of Health Physical Health: Physical characteristics and the way your body functions. Social Health: Relationship w/ other people. Spiritual Health: Purpose of life; may involve a religion Mental Health: Coping w/ the daily demands of life; recognize reality. Emotional Health: Expressing your feelings in an appropriate way.

WELLNESS

5 Health Definitions Health: The combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. Wellness: Optimal health in each of the five areas of health. Health-Illness Continuum: Your overall health can be plotted on the health-illness continuum. Each of the five aspects of health can be plotted on the continuum. Self-Esteem: Feeling good about yourself and your abilities. To achieve wellness, you must feel good about yourself.

Today, lifestyle factors are the major threat to teen health. Top two causes of death in the USA are heart disease and cancer. Top three underlying causes of death in the USA for one year are: 1. Tobacco Use. 2. Poor Diet/Inactivity. 3. Alcohol and other drugs.

11 You Decide Your Health! Unintentional Injuries:
Injuries that are not the result of purposeful acts. Not considered accidents because at least 85% of them could have been prevented. Leading Causes of Death (ages 15-24): 1. Unintentional Injuries. 2. Homicide. 3. Suicide. 4. Cancer. 5. Heart Disease 6. HIV/AIDS

Distinguish between things or people by noticing or emphasizing differences Prejudice? An adverse judgment formed without looking at the facts Stereotype? A prejudiced attitude that assigns a specific quality or characteristic to all people who belong to a particular group
