5 Communication skillsThree Skills: Interpersonal Communications, Refusal Skills, and Conflict ResolutionCommunication Skills- How one gives and receives information. Involves carefully choosing words and expressions to clearly say what you really mean.Interpersonal Communication: The exchange of thoughts, feelings, and beliefs between two or more people.
6 Interpersonal Communication Use the following concepts to strengthen your interpersonal communication:Use “I” Messages to express your feelings: Saying “I feel upset when I’m left out of our plans” focuses on your emotions rather than placing blame.Communicate with respect and caring: Keep your voice calm and use a respectful toneBe an active listener: Pay attention to what the other person is saying, do not interrupt and try to understand where the person is coming from.
7 Refusal SkillsRefusal Skills: are communication strategies that can help you say no when you are urged to take part in behaviors that are unsafe or unhealthful, or that go against your values.Having strong refusal skills allows you to say no firmly, respectfully, and effectively.
8 Strategies for good refusal skills Say NO in a firm voiceExplain Why: State your feelings, Tell the other person that suggested activity or behavior goes against your values of beliefsOffer Alternatives: Suggest a safe, healthful activity in oppositionStand Your Ground: Make it clear that you do not intend to back down from your position.Leave if Necessary: If the other person continues to pressure you or won’t take no for an answer, simply walk away.
9 Conflict-Resolution Skills Conflict Resolution: The process of ending a conflict through cooperation and problem solving.Some skills include:Stepping Away from an argumentAllowing the conflict to subsideUsing good interpersonal communication skillsMaintaining an attitude of respect for yourself as well as the other personCompromising with the other party-Giving up something to get to a solution
