Interpersonal Communication- –exchange of thoughts, feelings and beliefs b/t two or more people. –Clearly say what you mean –Pay attention to how you say something. –Be a good listener Avoid interrupting, nod, and ask appropriate questions

3 Health Skills cont.. Refusal skills –Communication strategies that can help you say NO! Peer Pressure, bullies Explain why Suggest alternatives Use appropriate body language Leave if necessary

4 Self management Skills Stress management- –Ways to deal w/ or overcome the negative effects of stress. Physical activity, boxing, MMA Listening to music Hot tub, Comedy

5 Analyzing Influences Internal influences –Include knowledge, values, likes, dislikes, External Influences – come from outside sources, –Family, friends, peers, environment, culture, laws, & media. The more aware of these influences you are, the better healthful choices you’ll make.

6 Responsible Decisions and Setting Goals 6 Steps of Decision Making 1) State the situation 2)List the Options 3)Weigh the Possible Options –HELP 4) Consider Values 5) Make a Decision and Act on It 6) Evaluate the Decision

7 Types Of Goals Short term goal –Finishing a project by Friday, clean your room by dinner, task or chores. Long term goal –Making varsity next year, improving grades, –May take months or years What kinds of short term goals might help a person become a physician or a computer technician?

8 Achieving your Goals Action Plan- set multi-step strategies to identify and achieve your goals. Set specific goals List the steps you will take to reach your goal Identify sources of help and support Set reasonable time frame for reaching your goal

9 Action Plan Evaluate your progress by establishing checkpoints. Reward yourself for achieving your goal.

10 Building Character Character- –can be defined as those distinctive qualities that describe how a person thinks, feels, and behaves.

11 Traits of Good Character Trustworthiness –Honest, loyal, and reliable Respect –Considerate of others and tolerant of differences. Considerate of others property Responsibility –Using self-control think before you act –Be accountable for your choices and decisions

12 More Traits Fairness –Be open minded, don’t take advantage of others, and don’t assign blame to others Caring –Kind and compassionate. Forgiving, help people in need. Citizenship obeys laws, rules and respects authority.

13 Building/Demonstrating Character Role models –Someone who success or behavior serves as an example for others. parents, sports stars, movie stars Demonstrating –Making a difference at home, school, community
