3 WHAT ARE HEALTH SKILLS? -HEALTH SKILLS -ARE SPECIFIC TOOLS AND STRATEGIES THAT HELP YOU MAINTAIN, PROTECT, AND IMPROVE ALL ASPECTS OF YOUR HEALTH. -THEY ARE ALSO KNOWN AS LIFE SKILLS -THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF HEALTH SKILLS.

4 TYPES OF HEALTH SKILLS -1. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS-(ALSO KNOWN AS INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION) IS THE EXCHANGE OF THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, AND BELIEFS BETWEEN TWO OR MORE PEOPLE. -* BEING A GOOD COMMUNICATOR INVOLVES BEING HEARD AND ALSO BEING A GOOD LISTENER. -STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION INCLUDE: -CLEARLY SAY WHAT YOU MEAN ( I MESSAGE) -PAY ATTENTION TO HOW YOU SAY SOMETHING (RESPECTFUL TONE) -BE A GOOD LISTENER ( DON’T INTERRUPT)

5 2.REFUSAL SKILLS- ARE STRATEGIES THAT CAN HELP YOU SAY NO WHEN YOU ARE URGED TO TAKE PART IN BEHAVIORS THAT ARE UNSAFE OR UNHEALTHY, OR THAT GO AGAINST YOUR VALUES. ( SEE P.36) - SAY NO IN A FIRM VOICE - EXPLAIN WHY - SUGGEST ALTERNATIVES - USE APPROPRIATE BODY LANGUAGE - LEAVE IF NECESSARY REFUSAL SKILLS

6 CONFLICT RESOLUTION SKILLS -3. CONFLICT RESOLUTION- IS THE PROCESS OF ENDING A CONFLICT THROUGH COOPERATION AND PROBLEM SOLVING.

7 CONFLICT RESOLUTION SKILLS FOLLOW THESE STEPS WHEN DEALING WITH CONFLICT: -TAKE TIME TO CALM DOWN AND THINK THROUGH THE SITUATION. -WHEN DISCUSSING THE CONFLICT, SPEAK CALMLY AND LISTEN ATTENTIVELY, ASKING QUESTIONS WHEN APPROPRIATE. -USE A POLITE TONE AND TRY TO BRAINSTORM SOLUTIONS WHERE NO ONE LOSES RESPECT. WORK TO RESOLVE THE CONFLICT PEACEFULLY.

8 4. SELF-MANAGEMENT SKILLS- (HAS TWO TYPES) A. PRACTICING HEALTHFUL BEHAVIORS * REMEMBER THE THINGS YOU DO TODAY WILL AFFECT YOU TOMORROW. B. MANAGING STRESS OR STRESS MANAGEMENT- STRESS MANAGEMENT- IS WAYS TO DEAL WITH OR OVERCOME THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF STRESS. SELF- MANAGEMENT SKILLS

9 ENGAGE IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LISTEN TO SOOTHING MUSIC MANAGE TIME EFFECTIVELY TAKE A WARM BATH LAUGH MORE OFTEN STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING STRESS
