Steps in writing a speech Know your audience/event Set objective Plan a well- structured speech Get information Writing a speech

Know Your Audience VIP or any senior level to be addressed? Why they are here? What do they have in common? How big an audience will it be? What do they know, and what do they need to know? Do they expect discussion about a specific subject and, if so, what? What is the audience’s attitude and knowledge about the subject of your talk? What is their attitude toward you as the speaker? Why are they interested in your topic?

Know the event Is it formal? Or informal? Any protocol specific to this event?

Choose Your Core Message What is the goal of your speech? To inform, persuade, motivate or entertain Only one single idea Too many ideas can lead to confusion among audiences

Find information Use facts and figures relevant to the topic Information or the content should be of good quality and that too in right quantity Adding examples, personal experiences, quotes and appropriate humor

Develop Structure to Deliver Your Message Introduction/Opening Body Conclusion

Body The largest part of your speech Formulating a series of points that you would like to raise Key information A statement about a project Implementation of a project Opinion The points should be organized

Closing It is an opportunity to: Summarize the main points of your speech Provide some further food for thought for your listeners Leave your audience with positive memories of your speech End with a final thought/emotion Adding a call to action at the end would motivate the audience to think and later act on your message

Spice it Up Make your speech more interesting Add variety and interest A good speech has pacing Vary the sentence structure Use the active voice and avoid passive sentences Repeat key words and points Ask rhetorical questions in a way that attracts your listeners’ attention Personal experiences and anecdotes Use quotes Caution Do not overused Used with care
