5 5 Parts of an Introduction:

6 Attention device/getter: p479  A tool used by speakers to grab the interest of the audience. These are the five most popular devices:  1. Humor  2. Quote  3. Stories or Personal Experiences  4. Rhetorical Questions  5. Startling Statements  Your attention getter must relate to your topic

7 State the thesis: p480  A thesis statement is a clearly written, simple sentence or question that states the point you expect to make in your presentation.  This single statement or question will guide your entire presentation.

8 Establish your ethos: p480  The point of the intro when you begin to establish credibility with your audience.  This is where you provide information on yourself, your specific expertise, or the research you have done on the topic

9 Orient the audience: p481  Information given to the audience that they likely do not already have and will need to understand the presentation.  This is also where you tell the audience why it is important for them to understand the message you are presenting. What is our motivation to listen

10 Preview the main points: p483  A courtesy to the audience to let them know exactly what to listen for.
