What Are My Options?

Selecting A College/University There are over 3,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. Keep the following in mind….. Four- year, two-year, public, private or vocational. Location.-Do you want to be close to home or far away? Size.- Under 3,000 students or over 30,000 students. Coed or single sex. Private or public institutions. Programs of study offered. Sports and extracurricular activity available. Cost.- Do not exclude any choices because of high cost. (Sometimes expensive schools can afford to give you more aid).

College Entrance Exams What are the SAT and ACT exams? These exams are used by colleges and universities nationwide to assess an applicant’s aptitude for college-level work. Even if you are not planning to apply to college, or to a college that does not require these exams; it would be a good idea to have them in your records for the future.

College Entrance Exams SAT  Critical Reading  Math  Writing Scores: 200 –800 each section. Total:2400 Scores Adjusted. DON’T GUESS! Registration available online at

College Entrance Exams ACT  English  Reading  Math  Science Reasoning  Writing (Optional for some colleges/universities– though you are strongly encouraged to take) Scores: 1-36 NO PENALTY FOR GUESSING Registration available online at

SAT Subject Tests Subject Tests are designed to measure your knowledge and skills in particular subject areas, as well as your ability to apply that knowledge. Required by CERTAIN colleges/universities for CERTAIN majors. Offered on the SAME DAY as the SAT You may register to take up to (3) SAT Subject Tests on the same test date. Registration available online at

Extended Time For Testing Students in the SPED program may qualify for extended time, please see the Mrs. Zwelling, SPED Department Chair as soon as possible before registering for the test

FEE WAIVERS Limited amount of fee waivers for SAT and ACT as well as for college application are available for students who participate in the free or reduced lunch program IMPORTANT: Fee waivers distributed Tuesdays and Thursdays during lunch or after school at the CAP office in Cambridge students please see your counselor for fee waivers. Deadline to request waivers is two weeks prior to the registration deadline.

CPT Miami Dade Placement Test At Miami Dade College – and other 2-year schools - you are exempt from the PERT if you score: SAT Verbal 500 Math ACT- 17- English 18- Reading 21- Math IMPORTANT: Please visit periodically for updates and changes. If you don’t obtain the minimum scores on the SAT, ACT or CPT, then you will be placed in remedial classes. Honors College will use the Writing score on the SAT and or ACT for admission.

Academic Courses Recommended For Florida State Universities 4 years of English 4 years of mathematics (Algebra I or higher) 3 years of natural sciences (including lab) 3 years of social studies 2 to 4 years of the same foreign language (American Sign Language may not be accepted by some out of state schools and private institutions) 4 years of academic electives (especially in the areas of math, natural sciences and/or social studies) IMPORTANT: Meeting “minimum” admission requirements does not guarantee admission. Admission to the university is selective and admission to a particular college, degree program or major, or term may be limited.

Keep photocopies of everything you mail!

Scholarships Do Not Fall From The Sky! Monthly Scholarship Bulletin Available at ghbraddock.dadeschools.net Look for scholarships from the schools where you are applying Look for outside scholarships (place of employment, community, church, etc) SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

NCAA Clearing House Athletes applying to a Division I or II Schools MUST fill out an NCAA Clearance House Form. See Mr. Whelan, Athletic Director or visit National Collegiate Athletic Association-official website for the NCAA.

Florida Financial Aid (FFAA) One application used for all State Programs (including Bright Futures) Application available online at: after Dec. 1 st of each year Florida Student Assistant Grant (FSAG) is a need-based program for degree seeking Florida undergraduate students attending public institutions First Generation matching Grant Program is available to all eligible students Florida Resident Access Grant (FRAG) is a program for degree seeking Florida undergraduate students attending private institutions Deadlines vary. CSS/Financial Profile Required by some colleges and universities Institutions use the information collected on the CSS Profile to help them award nonfederal student aid funds Application is available (October of senior year) online at
