MENTAL DISORDERS – an illness of the mind that can affect the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of a person prevents one from leading a happy, healthy and productive life People who suffer from a MENTAL DISORDER are often identified by their inability to copy in healthy ways with life’s changes, demands, problems or traumas

M ENTAL D ISORDERS ROAD TO RECOVERY begins with identifying the problem. SEVERITY of symptoms = SEVERITY of disease Each year, 20% of U.S. population (54 million people) are affected by some form of MENTAL DISORDER

M ENTAL D ISORDERS Behaviors - classified by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) CLASSIFIED – 2 types ORGANIC – caused by a physical illness or an injury that affects the brain FUNCTIONAL – a psychological cause and does not involve brain damage

M ENTAL D ISORDERS ORGANIC DISORDERS EXAMPLES: DEMENTIA DELIRIUM Mental illness that involves impaired brain function due to chemical imbalance or physical abnormality. DEMENTIA – severe and irreversible loss of mental ability DELIRIUM – condition of rapid confusion and lose of awareness of the environment

M ENTAL D ISORDERS DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS EXAMPLES: AUTISM ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER (ADD) Can START to show signs in early childhood. AUTISM – rare childhood disorder; the child is emotionally unresponsive and detached from their surroundings ADD– common disorder; characterized by a child’s inability to maintain concentration

M ENTAL D ISORDERS MOOD DISORDERS EXAMPLES: CLINICAL DEPRESSION MANIC DEPRESSION (BIPOLAR) Mental illness where a single, often painful, mood rules the personality. Can alternate from depression to excessive elation. CLINICAL DEPRESSION – disorder where deep feelings of helplessness, worthlessness and hopelessness occur MANIC DEPRESSION – condition where mania and depression alternate in cycles

M ENTAL D ISORDERS ANXIETY DISORDERS EXAMPLES: GENERAL ANXIETY & PANIC PHOBIA OBSESSIVE – COMPULSIVE DISORDER POST TRAUMATIC DISORDER Mental illness where a problem exists and it interferes with daily activities. Anxiety is common symptom or is the result from trying to control behaviors.

M ENTAL D ISORDERS GENERAL ANXIETY & PANIC – constant state of tension with no single cause; sudden attacks of terror PHOBIA – strong and irrational fear of something specific OBSESSIVE – COMPULSIVE – involves the presence of unwanted thoughts, emotions or behaviors POST TRAUMATIC– severe stress after experiencing a traumatic event

M ENTAL D ISORDERS SOMATOFORM DISORDERS EXAMPLES: HYPOCHONDRIA PSYCHOSOMATIC DISORDER Mental illness where there are physical symptoms but NO physical illness. HYPOCHONDRIA – PSYCHOSOMATIC DISORDER –

M ENTAL D ISORDERS PERSONALITY DISORDERS EXAMPLES: ANTISOCIAL PERSONALITY DISORDER PARANOID PERSONALITY DISORDER SCHIZOID PERSONALITY DISORDER COMPULSIVE PERSONALITY DISORDER PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE PERSONALITY DISORDER Mental illness where personality traits prevent people from interacting with others. Have trouble adapting to life and forming friendships.

M ENTAL D ISORDERS ANTISOCIAL PERSONALITY – little sense of responsibility; no respect for others PARANOID PERSONALITY – unfound suspicion and mistrust in others SCHIZOID PERSONALITY – condition of deep withdrawal from other people COMPULSIVE PERSONALITY – constantly concerned with rules and standards of others PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE – strongly resist cooperating with others

M ENTAL D ISORDERS DISSOCIATIVE DISORDERS EXAMPLES: AMNESIA MULTIPLE PERSONALITY Mental illness where the personality suffers sudden changes. RARE and USUALLY a result of an extreme stress or experience

M ENTAL D ISORDERS AMNESIA – sudden inability to remember basic personal information MULTIPLE PERSONALITY – illness where a person develops 2 or more separate personalities
