Day 1: 4/7 Cold War: What to do with Germany? LT1: Students will be able to read and answer questions regarding what happened to Germany following WWII. LT2: EQ1: How was Germany dealt with following WWII? EQ2: What happened at the Yalta Conference? Potsdam Conf?

Day 2: 4/8 Cold War: Containment/Iron Curtain LT1: Students will be able to read and answer questions regarding what happened to Germany following WWII. LT2: EQ1: What did the term “iron curtain” mean? EQ2: What was President Truman’s policy on communism?

Day 3: 4/9 Cold War: Containment- Korea LT1: Students will be able to answer questions regarding the “Best Years” LT2: EQ1: What happened in Korea? How were the Soviets and Chinese involved? EQ2: What was Joseph McCarthy’s claim? What industry did he claim was dominated?

Vocab terms to know Iron Curtain- Dividing Europe into 2 separate areas. Symbolize- Soviet efforts to block itself and satellite states from contact with West and non-Soviet areas. Containment- an effort to block the Soviets’ attempts to spread their influence by creating alliances and supporting weaker countries. Satellite Nations- countries dependent upon and dominated by the Soviet Union Truman Doctrine- Truman asked Congress for $400 million in economic and military aid for Turkey and Greece. Why?  US should support free peoples throughout the world who were resisting takeovers by “armed minorities” or “outside pressures”

Vocab terms to know Marshall Plan- Provide aid to all European nations that needed it.  Saying that this move was directed “not against any country or doctrine but against hunger, poverty, desperation and chaos”- NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organization  Defensive military alliance- an attack on one would be an attack on all.  Belgium, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal. Berlin Airlift- Soviet Union holds West Berlin hostage. Cut off all traffic into W Berlin. See map.  No supplies let in- starvation  Attempt to stop the Western alliance from trying to reunify Germany  Airlift: Fly food and supplies into West Berlin. 327 days, planes took off and landed every few minutes. 2.3 million tons of supplies- Food, fuel, medicine, Xmas presents

Day 4: 4/10 Cold War: McCarthyism / 2 nd Red Scare LT1: Students will be able to explain the fear of communism in the United States through the Red/Green dot game LT2: Students will identify the meaning of McCarthyism and the impact he had on America through lecture and political cartoons EQ1: Why were so many Americans accused of being communists? 2 nd Red Scare Following WWII, increased fear of the spread of communism- Abroad and in the USA  Especially espionage* in the US government and other social areas.  There really were Americans (in the government even) who were spying for the Soviet Union. Senator Joseph McCarthy led the charge against finding the communists  McCarthyism- practice of making accusations of disloyalty or treason without proper regard for evidence
