What is Depression? Depression is an illness that affects your thoughts, feelings, behavior and overall physical health. You feel sad or down for long periods of time (Lasting 2 or more weeks) It also affects social activity, appearance and the ability to handle every day decisions.

Why learn about it??? million Americans have depression at some time Among teens ~20% will suffer from depression at some point before adulthood. 30% of teens with depression develop a substance abuse problem. Untreated depression is the number 1 cause of suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for teens. (

Who Gets Depressed? Depression can affect anyone. Depression is among the leading causes of disability worldwide.

Is it serious? Yes, depression is linked to poor school performance and attendance, drug and alcohol abuse, runaways, and a feeling of hopelessness. Suicide is one of the top three killers of youths today.

Causes of Depression There is not one single cause of depression, it is usually a combination of things. Stress is however the leading cause of depression. Other things such as genetics, traumatic events ( sex abuse, parent aggression), low self esteem, stress, drug abuse and physical illness can contribute to depression.
