Bipolar Disorder is a condition where people go back and forth between periods of a very good or irritable mood. The mood swings between mania and depression can be very quick. WHAT IS BIPOLAR DISORDER?

This disorder affects men and women equally. It starts between the ages 15-25. The exact cause is unknown, but it occurs more often in people with bipolar disorder. WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF BIPOLAR DISORDER?

Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder include: Low mood or sadness Eating problems Lack of energy Feeling worthless, guilty, etc.. Thoughts of death & suicide Hard to concentrate, remember Lack of sleep or sleeping too much Having bipolar disorder increases the risks of suicide. Some people may abuse alcohol or other substances, which can make the symptoms and suicide risk worse. SYMPTOMS OF BIPOLAR DISORDER

To diagnose bipolar disorder, the health care provider may do some of the following: Ask about family medical history Ask about recent mood swings Do a through examination to look for illness Run laboratory tests Talk to family members Watch your behavior and mood Drugs may cause some symptoms. Drug use may also be a symptom of bipolar disorder SIGNS AND TESTS

Bipolar disorder can’t be prevented, but mood swings can be controlled with medicines. About 1 of 3 people will be completely free of bipolar disorder by taking mood stabilizer medicine for life. To help prevent depression or mood swings: Eat a balanced diet Exercise daily Avoid travel or other time zones Get about the same numbers of sleep every night Reduce stress Limit caffeine Seek treatment as soon as possible PREVENTION

Medications Such as Mood Stabilizers, Antidepressants, and Atypical Antipsychotics. Side affects of some of these include: - Drowsiness - Dizziness - Headaches - Heart burn - Mood swings - Acne - Muscle pain Other treatments include: -Electroconvulsive therapy -Sleep medication - Herbal Supplements TREATMENT
