Co-operation with TF on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution TFMM 7th Meeting, Helsinki, 10 – 12 May 2006 Co-operation with TF on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution Sergey Dutchak, MSC-East EMEP/MSC-E

TFMM 7th Meeting, Helsinki, 10 – 12 May 2006 Decision of the Executive Body concerning the establishment a Task Force on the Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution The functions of the Task Force will be to: develop a fuller understanding of the hemispheric transport of air pollution estimate the hemispheric transport of specific air pollutants for the use in reviews of protocols to the Convention EMEP/MSC-E

TFMM 7th Meeting, Helsinki, 10 – 12 May 2006 The first meeting of the Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution (Brussels, 1-3 June, 2005) Overview of the state of the science TF HTAP Policy-Relevant Science (Questions) How does the intercontinental or hemispheric transport of air pollutants affect air pollution concentration or deposition levels in the Northern Hemisphere for ozone, PM, acidification and eutrophication; Hg; and POPs ? What processes need to be better understood to describe the relative significance of intercontinental transport ? What fraction of measured pollutant concentrations or deposition levels is due to emissions from each of the other countries in the Northern Hemisphere? . . . EMEP/MSC-E

TFMM 7th Meeting, Helsinki, 10 – 12 May 2006 The first meeting of the Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution (Brussels, 1-3 June, 2005) Future work Observations an integrated (virtual) data centre: observations from satellites, aircraft and surface measurements, including PM, ozone, Hg and POPs Emissions common database for emissions Regional and global modelling intercomparison of modelled source-receptor relationships EMEP/MSC-E

TFMM 7th Meeting, Helsinki, 10 – 12 May 2006 The second meeting of the Task Force on Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution 6 – 8 June 2006, Hotel “Mir”, Noviy Arbat 36/9, Moscow, Russia Main agenda items: Exploring the state of science related to the intercontinental transport of POPs and Hg the role of methane as a tropospheric ozone precursor. Recommendation of TFMM workshop on HM and POP model review: to extend the MSC-E models to the global scale EMEP/MSC-E

Evaluation of initial and boundary conditions for regional model TFMM 7th Meeting, Helsinki, 10 – 12 May 2006 Evaluation of initial and boundary conditions for regional model Total depositions of D&F EMEP/MSC-E

Hemispheric/regional approach TFMM 7th Meeting, Helsinki, 10 – 12 May 2006 Hemispheric/regional approach Annual mean air concentrations of D&F Hemispheric/regional modelling Boundary and initial conditions Hemispheric model Regional model EMEP/MSC-E

Source-receptor relationships TFMM 7th Meeting, Helsinki, 10 – 12 May 2006 Source-receptor relationships Sources ( northern hemisphere ) European region European anthropogenic emission sources Remote anthropogenic emission sources ( North America, Asia, etc. ) Re - emission within Marginal seas, remote areas Country Atmospheric transport Sources (HEMISPHERE) Receptors (EUROPE) European anthropogenic Remote anthropogenic emission sources (North America, Asia, etc.) Re-emission within Northern Hemisphere Marginal seas, remote areas Environmental media Environmental media Re-volatilization Re-suspension Evaluation of European transboundary transport and contribution of hemispherical anthropogenic and re-emission sources EMEP/MSC-E

Source-receptor relationships TFMM 7th Meeting, Helsinki, 10 – 12 May 2006 Source-receptor relationships Austria 25% Slovakia 6% Poland 5% Germany 8% Czech Republic 9% Other 15% non-European sources 17% Re-emission Finland Other 16% Poland 6% Russian Federation 5% Ukraine 3% Sweden 21% non-European sources 40% Re-emission Contributions of different emission sources to total depositions of D&F over Austria and Finland EMEP/MSC-E

Source-receptor relationships TFMM 7th Meeting, Helsinki, 10 – 12 May 2006 Source-receptor relationships … Contributions of re-emission from Northern Hemisphere to D&F depositions over the territories of European countries EMEP/MSC-E

Global/hemispheric/regional approach TFMM 7th Meeting, Helsinki, 10 – 12 May 2006 Global/hemispheric/regional approach Hg pollution levels in Europe Global/Hemispheric modelling Global emissions estimates EMEP/MSC-E

Source-receptor relationships TFMM 7th Meeting, Helsinki, 10 – 12 May 2006 Source-receptor relationships Contribution of non-European sources to Hg depositions Contributions of hemispherical sources to Hg depositions 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% 100% Iceland Norway Kazakhstan Finland Malta Georgia Sweden Greece Ukraine CzechRepublic Germany Slovakia Hungary Poland … EMEP region up to 80% of Hg in deposition in Europe is originated by global sources EMEP/MSC-E

TFMM 7th Meeting, Helsinki, 10 – 12 May 2006 Conclusions The input of hemispheric sources to the contamination of European region is considerable for Hg and some POPs. External anthropogenic and re-emission sources is of importance for evaluation of source-receptor relationships for Hg and POPs in Europe. Compatibility of model input data for hemispheric and regional modelling should be under consideration. Close co-operation with and joint meeting of TFMM and TFHTAP on scientific and technical issues is highly appreciated. Переделать EMEP/MSC-E
