Class Expectations Be in seat when tardy bell rings. Put proper heading on all papers. Do not use electronic devices in class without teacher permission. Use restroom during passing breaks. Maintain a clean and orderly work area. Bring all of your supplies to class daily. Complete all of your work and turn it in on time. All MHS rules and policies shall be observed within the classroom. Course Description Welcome to Biology I! Our focus this school year will be learning and developing our skills as critical thinkers, readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. The development and mastery of these important literary skills is a critical component of achieving success in Biology, building strong relationships with others, and attaining a flourishing career as an adult. I am looking forward to an exciting year with you. Biology is the study of life and the interactions between all living things. The material that we learn in this class will be challenging, but also interesting and relevant. I have high expectations of all of my students. I expect each of you to fully participate, learn, ask questions, and continually build knowledge and understanding. I have an open door policy; I encourage you to come to me if you have any questions or need a little extra help with anything. What do I get if I follow class rules? Your appropriate behavior in class assures everyone of an environment conducive to learning. Some possible rewards for continuous appropriate behavior are: intrinsic value (satisfaction of learning), improved skills, verbal praise, positive note to parents, and Skipper Sails (Can be traded in for other rewards). What are the consequences if I don’t follow class rules? 1. Warning: the teacher provides a verbal reprimand/reminder to cadet. 2. 15 Minute Morning Detention: short time spent before school to contemplate conduct. 3. Parent Conduct: Parent will be contacted and possibly a parent meeting set up before student can return to classroom. 4. Referral to Administration: student will be immediately referred to administration for severe behavior problems. Where do I go to find weekly lesson plans and assignments? Schoolwires is our class website. This site will house the weekly agendas, assignment due dates, PDF copies of class handouts, important announcements, and more. Grade Scale Grade Breakdown Supplies Mrs. Reid’s Class Mandeville High School 2018-2019 School Year How will I check my grade in class?   Grade Scale Parents and students are also strongly encouraged to check the Student Progress Center on a weekly basis to view the most current grades for EVERY class. You can find this link on Mandeville High School’s website or Jpams.stpsb.org. If you do not already have a username and password, you can contact the school to set that up. A 93-100 B 85-92 C 75-84 D 67-74 F 0-66 What do I do if I am absent? Always check the class schoolwires for agendas, handouts, and assignment due dates. A student has one day for every day missed to turn in any work assigned on a day a student was absent. If a quiz was administered on a day a student was absent, the quiz must be made up on the first day the student returns. If previously assigned work was due on the day of the absence, the work is due on the first day the student returns otherwise it is considered late and will only receive 80% credit. What are the classroom policies? Grade Breakdown Late Assignments: Assignments turned in after the due date may be accepted with a 20% penalty for the first day and 10% every day after that at the discretion of the teacher. There are some assignments that will not be accepted late (study guides, work checked in class, etc). Restroom Policy: It is extremely important for students to be present for the entire class time. Students are encouraged to use the restroom during class change. However, students may earn hall passes through Skipper SAIL cards. Cell Phone Policy: If students are caught using their phones, the school cell phone policy will be followed. Please note that “using” the phone includes checking the time. There is a clock in the classroom. Assessments/Quizzes/Labs = 30% Tests/ Projects = 40% Semester Exam = 20% Current Event = 10% What are current events? Every 4 weeks you will need to select a current event that relates to biology. This is your opportunity to learn more about something that is interesting to you. This will count for 10% of your final grade.
