1 Ms. Swing’s Class McDougle Middle School 2016-2017 School Year
Common Core Math 7 Class Expectations Come to class on time. Maintain an organized binder with all given materials. Turn in all assignments on time and completed to the best of your ability. Be an engaged learner- participate in class discussions and activities. Contact Ms. Swing PHONE: ext Course Description In this course, we will be building on the skills and strategies we began working with last year in Common Core Math 6. We will be digging deeper into the state standards and working hard to develop our problem solving skills. This class will involve a great deal of problem-based learning and class discussion, so students should be prepared to work through challenging problems and then discuss their strategies with others. Parents and Guardians- we need your support to be sure that your student completes his or her homework, prepares for tests, and completes projects thoughtfully. Where do I go to find agendas and assignments? This class follows the North Carolina Common Core State Standards, which can be found on the Department of Public Instruction (DPI)’s website. Students are responsible for copying down their homework assignments from the board into their planner each day. In addition, descriptions of the day and digital copies can be found at our class website: A copy of the district-provided scope and sequence is also available there. What should I expect in terms of homework? With only 47 minutes of instruction every day, students need extra time to practice the skills they learn in the classroom. Students are expected to complete all homework assignments with their best efforts. Students should plan on working on a homework assignment every night for approximately thirty minutes. Students may find homework assignments on the board in the classroom or on the class website. What should I expect in terms of assessments? There are two main types of assessments in this class: quizzes and tests. Quizzes: Students should expect to have periodic quizzes to assess the material previously learned. These quizzes may or may not be announced. Students should review their notes, homework, and other materials every night to be prepared for each quiz. Tests: Students will be tested after each unit with performance-based assessments, which have been created by the Chapel Hill/Carrboro School district. These tests will ask students to use their reasoning skills to solve problems and justify their answers. Students should prepare diligently for these tests by reviewing notes from class, going over previous tasks, and looking over their homework. 1

2 Materials needed in class
Ms. Swing’s Class McDougle Middle School School Year Grade Scale What do I do if I am absent? A = 100% - 90% B = 89% - 80% C = 79% - 70% D = 69% - 60% F < 59% Always check the class Weebly site for worksheets and assignment due dates. When students are absent from class, they are responsible for making up any work they missed. In addition to the class website, when students return from an absence, they will find a worksheet letting them know what they missed while they were absent. A student has two extra days to turn in any work assigned on a day a student was absent. If a quiz was administered on a day a student was absent, the quiz must be made within the first week the student returns. If previously assigned work was due on the day of the absence, the work is due on the first day the student returns otherwise it is considered late. What should I expect in terms of classwork? Students will be asked to complete some assignments while working in class, such as a warm-up or review activity. All classwork assignments are carefully chosen by the teachers to help students better understand the material- it is not “busy work”. For this reason, students should participate actively in class discussions and work to complete all tasks given during class. Grade Breakdown What is an Interactive Student Notebook? Quizzes % (in-class quizzes, certain tasks in class may count in this category) Projects % (may be in or out of class- these will be long term projects) Homework % (graded on both accuracy and completion) Tests % ((district-mandated PBAs, given after each unit) The Interactive Student Notebook (ISN) is a portfolio of student work. Students will be using a composition book to create the ISN to help keep track of important notes they will need throughout the year. These notebooks will mainly stay at school, but may be taken home to use as study tools. A majority of the notes we take will be completed in the ISN, so it is imperative that it be complete and up to date. If a student misses a day of school where a notebook page was completed, it is their job to get the materials they missed. What should I do if I don’t understand something? Students can come in the classroom at lunch for additional help and support. If the student has questions or concerns and needs additional support, they need to ask the teacher to sign their planner to come in at lunch. This must be done ahead of time, per school policy. In addition, some helpful links may be found on the class website. Do you give extra credit? Since students have the opportunity to rework any homework assignments and projects to make up missed credit, there are VERY FEW extra credit opportunities. Students will be presented with extra credit opportunities at the teacher's discretion. Extra credit points will only be awarded for full and correct completion of the problems. Students will not be allowed to receive extra credit points if they have any missing assignments. Materials needed in class EVERY DAY! Planner 2+ sharpened pencils (with erasers!) Correcting pen Highlighter 3-ring binder with loose-leaf paper Any assignments that are due I can’t wait to have a great year! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns- my contact information can be found on the front page. 2
