1 Language Arts Class Rules Course Description Class Expectations
Mrs. Oeser’s Class Trexler Middle School Year Language Arts “Literature is no one’s private ground, literature is common ground; let us trespass freely and fearlessly and find our own way for ourselves.” - Virginia Woolf Class Rules Be respectful. Be responsible. Be safe. Be collaborative. Be successful. Class Expectations Enter the classroom quietly and be in the seat and ready to work when the tardy bell rings. Begin work immediately on the assigned “Do Now.” Do not use electronic devices in class without teacher permission. Raise your hand to speak or leave your seat. Bring all of your supplies to class daily, including your Tier 1 Laptop. Laptop devices should be fully charged daily! Also, it is imperative that you handle your device with care! Complete all of your work and turn it in on time. Follow all Onslow County and Trexler Middle rules and policies within the classroom. Course Description Welcome to 7th Language Arts! Our focus this school year will be learning and developing our skills as critical thinkers, readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. The development and mastery of these important literary skills not only is important to achieving success in the Language Arts classroom, it is a critical component of achieving success in other school subjects, building strong relationships with others, and attaining a flourishing career as an adult. Basically, the quality of life you experience now through adulthood will depend a lot on how well you read, write, and communicate with others. Where do I go to find agendas and assignments? The agenda for our class will be located not only on the white board but it will also be located in the appropriate location using Office Office 365 will house the weekly assignments, due dates, copies of class handouts, important announcements, and more. *The agenda will be posted daily in class, as well as homework! What happens if I turn in an assignment late? Work is expected to be turned in on time! Late work will be accepted but may be subject to partial credit. How will I check my grade in class? Class progress reports will be sent home every three weeks in paper form. Progress reports and report cards should be signed and returned. Parents and students are also strongly encouraged to check PowerSchool on a weekly basis to view the most current grades for EVERY class.

2 Grade Scale 10 point scale Grade Breakdown Supplies
Mrs. Oeser’s Class Trexler Middle School Year What do I do if I am absent? Grade Scale 10 point scale Always check Office 365 for agendas, handouts, and assignment due dates. A student has 3-5 days to turn in any work assigned on a day a student was absent. If a quiz was administered on a day a student was absent, the quiz should be made up on the first day the student returns. If previously assigned work was due on the day of the absence, the work is due on the first day the student returns. Students are responsible for seeing the teacher if a question arises or if they need help in determining what needs to be completed as a result of the absence. A = B = 80-90 C = 70-80 D = 60-70 Grade Breakdown Do I have to read outside of class? Tests, Quizzes, and Projects: 40% Classwork: 40% Homework: 20% All students will be expected to read independently on a daily basis. Students must bring a reading book to school so they are prepared for independent reading in Language Arts. What types of writing will I do this year? Students will be writing a personal narrative essay, an informative/explanatory essay to examine a topic and convey ideas, an argumentative essay to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence, and a short research paper and project. In addition, students will be completing a variety of activities which will require writing. No text language should be utilized in any form when writing in class, and all assignments should be edited appropriately before submitting. Not only should all essays be edited appropriately, but all responses, including short answer questions! Sentences should always begin with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark! Remember, in order to be a successful writer, you need to be able to effectively proofread and edit your own work! Supplies General Supplies for all Classes! 2 inch Binder Notebook Filler Paper Pencils Blue/Black Pens 12 pack of colored pencils Pencil Pouch (must fit in binder) Small School Scissors Highlighters 100 pack of Sheet Protectors Glue sticks (two packs) 8 pack & 5 pack of Tab Dividers 1 pack of Graph Paper Ruler AVID and 7th grade English Language Arts The AVID Mission Statement addresses goals that are well-aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Both AVID and CCSS focus on providing students with “key cognitive strategies and skills that students need for college and careers.” Both also emphasize development and refinement of student competence in Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR), the key components of curriculum in the AVID world, and naturally lead to professional development in the teaching of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, so that teachers have the opportunity to add to their cognitive toolkits in order to teach literacy skills effectively as they implement rigorous, higher-level thinking activities that help students address the challenges of expository reading and writing tasks.
