Our focus this school year will be learning and developing our skills as critical thinkers, readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. The development and mastery of these important literary skills not only is important to achieving success in the Language Arts classroom, it is a critical component of achieving success in other school subjects, building strong relationships with others, and attaining a flourishing career as an adult. Basically, the quality of life you experience now thorough adulthood will depend a lot on how well you read, write, and communicate with others. What do I get if I follow class rules? Your appropriate behavior in class assures everyone of an environment conducive to learning. Some possible rewards for continuous appropriate behavior are: intrinsic value (satisfaction of learning), improved skills, verbal praise, positive note to parents, delicious treats, and an invitation to Reward Day. What are the consequences if I don’t follow class rules? 1. Warning: the teacher provides a verbal reprimand/reminder to student. 2. Loss of Privileges: recess, field trips, Reward Day. 3. Parent Note: Parent will be contacted. to discuss situation. 4. Referral to Administration: A student will be immediately referred to Mrs. O’Reilly or Ms. Mortonson for severe behavior problems. Where do I go to find agendas and assignments? Edlio is our class website. This site will house the weekly agendas, assignment due dates, PDF copies of class handouts, important announcements, and more. Please bookmark the following site and check it daily. School Speak is where you will go to access your grades on assignments, participation, tests, and projects as well as where you see your progress reports and attendance. What happens if I turn in an assignment late? Work not completed and turned in by the assigned date is considered late. Completed late work will be docked 10% each day that it is late. Incomplete late work will be graded according to the degree of completion in addition to being docked 10% for lateness.

2 Grade Scale Grade Breakdown Supplies
Mrs. Bouvet’s Class St. Finn Barr School School Year How will I check my grade in class? Grade Scale You can always see your standing in class by checking School Speak. Do not wait for the progress report that comes out once a quarter – check every week! If you are getting below a C, you will be aware of that as will your parents.. If you are not able to pull up your grade, your parents may be called in for a meeting. A = 96% - 100% A- = 93% - 95% B+ = 91% - 92% B = 87% - 90% B- = 84% - 86% C+ = 81% - 83% C = 74% - 80% C- = 70% - 73% D+ = 67% - 69% D = 64% - 66% D- = 60% - 63% F 59% and below What do I do if I am absent? Always check the class Edlio site for agendas, handouts, and assignment due dates. A student has one extra day to turn in any work assigned on a day a student was absent. If a quiz was administered on a day a student was absent, the quiz must be made up on the first day the student returns. If previously assigned work was due on the day of the absence, the work is due on the first day the student returns otherwise it is considered late and will be docked points. Do I have to read outside of class? All students will be expected to read independently on a daily basis for 30 minutes. Students must bring a book within their ZPD range (assigned according to the STAR test) to school to read when work is completed.. Students are expected to read 10 books a year (at least 200 pages) and take the corresponding Accelerated Reader test. I will conference with you all weekly regarding your books. Grade Breakdown Assessments / Quizzes = 30% Classwork (including ISN) = 30% Homework = 20% Participation = 10% Independent Reading (AR) = 10% What types of writing will I do this year? Writing to Learn Pieces refer to daily writing activities students will complete to assist comprehension of what we are reading. These will be graded for completion. Public Writing Pieces refer to essays and other writing projects that students will complete on their Google Drive account. Numerous public writing pieces will be completed throughout the year (at least one per quarter). The public writing pieces will be stored in both Google Drive in addition to a writing folder kept in the student’s homeroom. What is an Interactive Student Notebook? The Interactive Student Notebook (ISN) is a portfolio of student work. The notebook is organized in a left-side and right-side format. Every right-side of the notebook will house teacher directed notes / activities, while left-side assignments will showcase student understanding of right-side material in a creative and unique manner. A college-ruled composition book or spiral notebook will be used for the ISN. 30% of the ELA grade is based on CLASSWORK., which includes the ISN. The majority of classwork, notes, AND vocabulary, will be completed in the ISN, so it is imperative that it be complete and up to date. Supplies One binder (can be shared with other classes) One college ruled single subject notebook One glue bottle/one pair of scissors College-ruled filler paper Multiple pencils One chunky eraser One set of 12 or more colored pencils or markers One handheld pencil sharpener One set of four or more highlighters Colored correcting pens What do I do if I need help with L.Arts?
