Warm-up What information can you get from looking at the following picture? Take out NEW behavior log Copy Objective, HW into assignment list Select letters to go home Parent letters

Goals * State the Objective(s)/Standard (s)- Sci.7.1a, L.7.4b-L.7.6, RI.7.4 * State the Purpose (Big Idea) - To apply language standards to understand words and meaning more effectively in interpreting scenarios of given science experiments and fossilization factors SWBAT understand fossil-related scenarios described in images and texts with grade-appropriate language and nuances in word choice and meaning SWBAT annotate given text passages

Mantra Today is a great day for science because: science is power. You are powerful because: I always make a difference.

Agenda Identify what is needed to know to revise and understand the situation in the model Determining important info. from text and photo examples Gallery Walk Guided and independent practice Summary/ Parking lot feedback/ questions

What do we need to understand? What knowledge should we know to understand how animals fossilize/ get buried and left behind? Environments, Grass/Soil, Weather, & Water Cycle Where/why bones are found, what happens to them Where animals live/ normal diet, animals vs. humans Fossil and animal ID and types Graves Time Scale and Dating How/where things die, extinctions/why, & decomposition (what/how long) Preservation (freezing, amber, ash, etc.) Which animals fossilize/how

Annotating text and figures Evidence Underline Key words or facts ! Interesting or new information ♥ Favorite / Something you like ? Question or Confusion C Connection * This is important I understand this part

Ways to Analyze Discuss the pros and cons of __________. How can you classify ________ according to _________? How can you compare the different parts of _________? How is _________ connected to _________? How would you explain _________? What can you infer _________? What can you point out about _________? What evidence in the text can you find that _________? What explanation do you have for _________? What ideas support/validate_________? What is the problem with _________? Why do you think _________?

Gallery Walks Travel with your group Score cards with group work Stay on task, discussing the images Take notes/analyze Rotate to your right around the room Do not write on papers unless there are plastic sheets with expo markers (3) Annotate on plastic sheets with whiteboard markers

Reading Text There are two major types of fossils - body fossils and trace fossils. Both are the remains of living organisms. Body fossils reveal the body structure of the organism while trace fossils reveal the activities of these organisms. The process of fossilization is called taphonomy.

Fossil Record The history of life as documented by fossils, the remains or imprints of the organisms from earlier geological periods preserved in sedimentary rock.

Summary/ questions We can draw information from figures by: _____________________________________________ Last questions… First biweekly test Thursday in class!

Getting ready for the Biweekly! CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.7.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.7.4.B Use common, grade-appropriate Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., belligerent, bellicose, rebel). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.7.5 Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.7.6 Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.

Connections Friday 1-2 volunteers How could you find out more about or interact with fossils or previous life? OR Local current event related to modeling, causes and effects, fossils…
