1 NEW Behavior Log is filled out for 10/10/16
Copied Objective, HW into assignment list Balloon Car is out and ready! WARM-UP: 1. Which of the following is NOT a force? a. Speed b. Gravity c. Friction d. Magnetism

2 Newton’s Laws Check: 2. Which situation is an example of Newton’s third law of motion? A. A ball in a vacuum container moves in a straight line at a constant velocity. B. A ball in a vacuum container accelerates when kicked with a great amount of force. C. A person riding in a forward-moving car continues to move forward when the car stops suddenly. D. A person in a canoe moves the paddle backward in the water, and the canoe moves forward in the water.

3 Connections Friday Volunteers
Explain how a sport you love may need to use physics to explain how it works OR Brainstorm an object with the fastest velocity or acceleration you know Talk about your favorite trip and how you travelled by distance and displacement

4 Mantra - Your Turn! Today is a great day for science because:
Science is power. We are powerful because: We always make a difference.

5 Goals * State the Objective(s)/Standard (s)- RI 7.3; W2; Sci 2f
* State the Purpose (Big Idea) -SWBAT explain how objects move by using multiple descriptors (speed, velocity, acceleration) and apply kinematic problem solving skills to solve problems in real life situations as told in a pick-your-path-story. SWBAT Compare/Contrast and Apply techniques to measure speed and velocity while analyzing how individuals, events, and ideas interact in real life situations as told in a pick-your-path-story.

6 Agenda I Do: Vocabulary/ Sample Problems We Do: Frayer Models
You Do: Checkpoint Problems, Story Reading We Do: Car Fixes and Races You Do: Graph of car placement and speed Summary/ Feedback/ Questions

7 Period 3: Graphing distance vs. time!
Miss K leaves the house and goes 2 miles in 4.5 minutes She gets stuck in standstill traffic for 1.5 minutes She forgets something and turns around. Takes 2 minutes to get back to the house. She stays for 2 minutes in the house looking for lost item. She heads back out on road, travels 4 miles in 8 minutes

8 Kinetic Motion Focus on 3 descriptions: Distance (d) Displacement (x)
Speed (s) Velocity (v) Acceleration (a)

9 Speed vs. Velocity Speed (s): Distance / Time =d/t
All the distance you move in any direction vs. the time you spend moving Scalar! Velocity(v): Displacement / Time =∆x/t How far you have moved from the starting position vs. how much time you traveled Vector!

10 Distance’s link to time and speed

11 Moving through the classroom…
Speed =d/t Distance (# of Blocks) Time (seconds)

12 Using slope for speed/velocity

13 Graphing Velocity vs. time
Miss K starts to move. From 5-10 sec, she moves at a velocity of 10 m/s. By 15 sec, she is moving at 40 m/s. She then slows down to 20 m/s in 10 seconds.

14 Area Under the Curve = Displacement

15 Story Check-In: So far, what outside ideas, events, and students have shaped the context of the story?

16 Balloon-Powered Car Challenge!
Create a balloon (air) powered race car for maximum speed and distance, and to demonstrate Newton’s Laws of motion. We will test and race them, measure distance, speed, velocity, and acceleration for PRIZES! You can build the cars out of any material, such as tissue roll, match box, spaghetti box, paper etc.

17 Questions to think/write about...
Create and describe a plan to test changes in distance by using a balloon-powered car Basketball Team Challenge: How could you calculate your total displacement running during a basketball game? Cheerleader  Challenge: How could you test and calculate a flyer's velocity falling from a cradle?

18 Balloon Car Races NAME # OF BLOCKS TIME

19 Last Items/ Questions HW: Connections Friday Think about your progress and effort in Units 1 & 2 for Reflection/Celebration once grades are back Recommended to visit: Need Physics help or want to talk about your grades? Office Hours Saturday, 12-1 at T.B.A.

20 GO GO FEEDBACK FRONTIER!
Miss K – In my baggie (Comments on my teaching, living up to my goals, and any personal things you need to privately tell me) Your peers – Feedback to 1 or 2 people… What is something you saw him/her do that matched up with our class values? Why was it really great to see this?

21 Slope = Acceleration
