1 IT’S A GREAT DAY FOR VISIONS!
Warmup: List 10 observations and 2 inferences about things in the room. Take out your behavior log/ Label the back for this week Copy Objective, HW into assignment list Letter about your surveys Parent newsletter Select letters to go home

2 Review from last week How do you Know? What is Science?
Observations/Inferences  Purpose, questioning, describing, explaining

3 Mantra Today is a great day for science because: science is power.
You are powerful because: I always make a difference.

4 Goals for today * State the Objective(s)/Standard (s)- Sci.7.1a, L.7.4b-L.7.6, RI.7.4 * State the Purpose (Big Idea) - To apply language standards to understand words and meaning more effectively in interpreting scenarios and given science experiments SWBAT interpret and explain the class vision and their role in science SWBAT determine how figurative language, connotation, and tone interact in the story of “The Lorax”

5 Agenda Scientific Tools Mapping Greenwood The Lorax
Thinking about the future… Where/Why Science? Scientific Tools Mapping Greenwood The Lorax Summary/ Due Dates/ Questions

6 CLASS VISION! As scientists, we are powerful enough to realize our impact on the environment, our place in history, and our community’s needs. We use our curiosity, creativity, and scientific tools to map, lead, make connections, and better express (verbally, visually, and in writing) phenomena and the state of the world around us to better understand, respect, and impact it positively in the long-term.

7 Where do we fit?

8 Thinking about the future…
What does Greenwood Need/ What will you be? 3 Adjectives… How do you need to behave to get there?

9 Science & Miss K Cares, passions, motives, drive
Swirling around are the questions why. This curiosity fuels my life, a bred science-lover Where the name of the game is to do better, reach higher, to new things discover To me, not only to describe what we see, But what we feel, how we connect, how we strive to be Because to me, science is part of who I am A reason why I’ve moved across the land And in my opinion, it’s time that together we band Because these problems we face are far too grand These injustices I’ve learned are shocking, I won’t stand For a nation for freedom who denies a fellow man With science we learn about each other, What we need, what we love, what we all come to desire And not just for us people, because all life is truly sacred But to support those without voices, without names, whose lives are taken for granted My voice is a beacon For this mission flag I wave, Is too important, too vital to fall to a grave. Science and math are literally everywhere But to a higher calling, I challenge, the answer is out there.

10 Your turn… 1. Create a poem, rap, story, paragraph….etc. to describe:
How you interact with elements of science every day How you will use your knowledge Why you are here

11 Community Mapping

12 Identifying where science can fix needs
Our Toolbox: Scale Power People Environment Animals Surveys and Research Building connections with other people and places

13

14 Mapping Greenwood for its resources (In groups)
2.  Create your own map of Greenwood. Draw spaces for people, animals, and the environment 3. What does it tell you about the resources available and the needs of the town?

15 Storytelling

16

17 Other important elements
Connotation - an idea or feeling you get from a word, beyond its literal meaning. Tone – The writer’s attitude toward a subject or an audience You can often tell this by the kinds of words used and opinions included

18 Taking Action outside of experiments: The Lorax
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it’s not” Interesting words Connotation Tone

19 Discuss (In groups) How does language used in “The Lorax” makes readers want to make a positive environmental change in their communities?

20 If I were the Lorax, this is how I would help our Earth…
4. Plan how you could use scientific tools to make a difference here. Scale Power People Environment Animals

21 If I were Dr. Seuss, I would tell a story by:
5. What kinds of language would you use to tell your story to make people want to get involved in helping the environment? Interesting words Connotation Tone

22 Last Items/ Questions We all have given reasons to be studying science in this class Mapping our communities can be one way to find out what our environment needs When telling stories of places, language choice and tone can greatly impact how readers want to get involved
