3 Preparation for the Task
You will not have access to the book for the exam. However, you may use whatever notes you have taken. This includes half sheet assignment papers. To prepare for the task, take the following notes: 1. What are two possible themes in this text and where is the evidence? 2. What are two symbols that are found in this text? Record evidence. 3. What is the style of the translation that we’ve read? Record evidence. 4. Fact based observations – summarize the plot of the text by writing a sentence summary of each chapter.

4 Your Task Plan your response to the provided prompt. Produce a 3-4 sentence introduction paragraph which includes a thesis/answer to the question. You will also write the first paragraph. Create an outline for your response. Each bullet point should represent a single paragraph. Your reference to evidence should clearly support your thesis. Your commentary should clearly connect your evidence to your thesis. Bullet point evidence for the purpose of this task: not quotes, but incidences and evidence from the text.

5 Prompt Explain and analyze how the text “The Stranger” expresses the theme of the struggle between free will and authority. To answer this question, you may wish to consider who has free-will and who has authority in “The Stranger”. For this timed response, you will need to create an intro paragraph with a thesis statement, and your first body paragraph.

6 Break down the question:
Compare and Contrast means that you will writing about how the themes are similar and different from one another. Compare or contrast Camus’ theme of the meaninglessness of life and the absurd in The Stranger with other the themes of other texts that you have read. Analyze this theme and how its presentation contributes to each work you discuss. Theme You’re not getting out of this essay without a discussion of not only the theme of The Stranger but another text that you have read. Analyze Remember your COST Analysis terms: Content, Context, Style, Theme. These factors contribute to theme and deserve your attention.
