Things to have out/do NEW Behavior Log is filled in if you have it this week Copied Objective, HW into assignment list HAVE OUT: DEADLINES FOR TODAY Procedure – Past Due Signed Lab Safety Contracts – Past Due Parent Letters out tomorrow

Mantra - Your Turn! Today is a great day for science because: Science is power. We are powerful because: We always make a difference.

Do You Know? Choose the most appropriate units to measure the weight of a textbook a) Pounds b) Grams c) Ounces d) Kilograms

Goals * State the Objective(s)/Standard (s)- Sci.7.1a, RI 7.1/2, W7.2 * State the Purpose (Big Idea) - Example science reports will provide students with models of how to write informational text about an experiment and adequately explain results and conclusions in an experiment SWBAT summarize techniques and tools available to make measurements when collecting data

Agenda I Do: Types of Data Tables/Graphs, Measurement Tools We Do: Discuss Reading Inventory Data Tables, Expectations Groups: Predict/Attempt use of Tools You Do: Reading Summary Summary/ Feedback/ Questions

Tables Due Friday Clear with UNITS At least 2 trials (control and test runs) Figure # and Caption Labels Table 1: ___________________ Trial Measurement 1 Measurement 2 Measurement 3 1 2 3 Caption: _________________________________________

Graphs Due Friday Labeled x and y axis with units Used the whole graph space Title Key that makes sense Clear No mistakes! Figure # and Caption Labels

Written Results Section: Due Fri. Refer to your tables and graphs as you describe trends and basic comparisons in your data. DO NOT make assumptions about what the numbers mean until the conclusion section!

Reading Inventories How could we put the data from our inventories into a data table? Where would we put our counts of each preference? How do we include qualitative responses?

MEASUREMENT

Individual vs. Group Work Should you use the silent, quiet, or projection voice? Should you work alone or cooperate as a team? PARTICIPATION Score cards EXPECTATIONS Equal participation and effort based on your abilities On-task all the time Talking about the assignment only

Expectations GIST Summary: Who What Where When Why How

Predict data table set-up: Students will measure select objects of varying shape, size, and weight using standard metric and non-metric tools

Be ready to explain what you did!! Group task: Teams of 5 at ONE station Label which item you are measuring! Work with your teammates to describe as many ways that you can measure the item as possible Actually measure the items and record the measurements Tools to measure are up front…Return them to the front once you are done with them Work together… ie: Tool master Measurer Data Recorder Name/Work Checker Units Checker Be ready to explain what you did!!

How did you measure things? Item: Ways: Item: Ways: Item: Ways: Item: Ways:

Your Turn: Carefully read the small text and summarize the passage: Measurement is the process of obtaining the magnitude of a quantity relative to an agreed standard. Measurement of any quantity involves comparison with some precisely defined unit value of the quantity. Standard units of measure need to be identified and defined as accurately as possible. The system that is used in the scientific community is called Système International d’Unités, abbreviated to SI. All of the SI units used in scientific measurements can be derived from just seven fundamental units. Apart from mass, each of these units has a definition based on an unchanging property of nature. A number of non-SI units are commonly used, even though the SI system of units covers all scientific measurements. The reasons for this are historical, political and for everyday convenience.

Last Items/ Questions Review Project Packet & have a guardian sign it! Need Troubleshooting or Project help? LAST Office Hours Saturday, 12-2 at McDonald’s DEADLINES COMING UP: Data due Friday (Start to collect it & Test your experiments!)

If Time: Same groups Measurement Worksheet… “Dip your toes in the water…” Label tools Plus one sentence about what each tool may be used for

GO GO FEEDBACK FRONTIER! Miss K – In my baggie (Comments on my teaching, living up to my goals, and any personal things you need to privately tell me) Your peers – Feedback to 1 or 2 people… What is something you saw him/her do that matched up with our class values? Why was it really great to see this?

Performance Task Rubric

This Week… Can’t help but think of home A place where Chemistry swirled, and I was never alone Parents who always questioned Dinner talks - always a lesson To my mother, everything made sense To be able to break life down into its simplest elements The tiniest part of existence So carefully found and compared yet seemingly so far from our lens

Life Depends on Chemistry Chemistry: The study of composition, structure, properties, and change in matter. Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space Write out in detail your observations of the outside 5 senses! How do you think they are related to chemistry?
