Lockdown Procedure

What is a Lockdown? A Lockdown is a rehearsed crisis response plan that is activated once there is an actual or perceived threat of harm to students, staff, and/or visitors. The plan requires the participation of all employees to implement the plan in order to minimize the risk of injury.

Lockdown An announcement will be made over the intercom the building is in “lockdown”. The strobe light will be turned on to alert the staff and students in the cafeteria and gym. If a person reports information that leads to the lockdown, it is important to obtain the persons name, address, and telephone number to provide to police. Staff and students on the exterior of the building will be notified by intercom and/or walkie-talkie. If the danger is inside the building those at recess should seek cover or concealment immediately in the area behind the community pool building to the east of campus.

Lockdown Call 911 to report the situation, stay on the line, follow instructions given by the 911 operator. The bells will be turned off. The district staff including administrators, teachers, or support personnel will not be used at any time to search the building. Searches during lockdown are the responsibility of trained police personnel. McKinney PD have been provided access to MISD facilities and will not require assistance to gain access.

Classroom Lockdown Procedure Immediately check hall for students and quickly allow students into the class, if safe Close and lock classroom door Close blinds and/or cover window with black paper Slide one card under the door with the black clip attached Green Card-There are no injuries and the room is secure Blue Card-You need assistance Inform students that a lockdown is underway Turn off the lights and Smart Board

Classroom Lockdown Procedure Move the class to your safe area of the room, away from windows where you won’t be seen Keep students calm Make a list of students present with their regularly assigned homeroom teacher. Note missing homeroom students. Remain silent Do not use a cell phone within the classroom to call or text family. Ensure all cell phone ringers are off.

Classroom Lockdown Procedure Cont. Remain in the class until the “all clear” is given by McKinney PD. No one will enter class/area except for law enforcement. McKinney PD will slide their badge under the door for identification. Disregard school bells. The campus shall remain in lockdown until removed by the police department only.

Classroom Lockdown Procedure Cont. Depending on the nature of the emergency, law enforcement may come to your classroom and evacuate you and your students. If this occurs, follow the instructions given by the officer. Take the class roster and your emergency bag with you. It should be hung near the door. The emergency bag should have 3 copies of the class roster with student ID #’s, emergency contacts list, first aid kit, and a flashlight. It is important to know absent or early release students. Remain with students during the evacuation. Upon arrival at the safe site, take attendance. Report any missing or injured students to the Command Center.

Recess Lockdown Procedure Walk the students to the building at the community pool to the east of the campus. Instruct the students to sit quietly until further instruction. **If danger is outside: students and staff will receive instruction to immediately come in the building for protection. ***It is imperative that you have a working walkie-talkie at recess so we can inform you of all important announcements.

Cafeteria and Gym Lockdown Students, staff and visitors in the cafeteria or gym will lockdown in place. Staff should slide the correct card with the black clip under the door. Green card there are no injuries Blue card assistance needed Staff will announce the lockdown and advise everyone to remain calm and quiet. Remain calm and quiet until released by McKinney PD. If the danger is outside students from recess will be entering the cafeteria for shelter.

Review with students Anyone in the hallway should move to the closest classroom immediately. Students and staff in the library should remain in the library and follow instructions given by librarian or teacher. Students in the bathrooms, should move to a stall, lock the door and stand on the toilet and remain quiet.

Lockdown Drill An unannounced lockdown drill in the district normally in Jan. The bells will not be turned off for the drill. Administrators or office staff may discontinue the drill.

Community Alert Notice Community alert notice to be put in place when an outside community danger is near the campus. Example : Outside of school threat Announce over intercom once notice is received Notify staff and students that are outside of the building to come in for protection. Secure all perimeters of the building. No one leaves or enters the building until the Community Alert Notice has been lifted.

Tornado Drill Guidelines An announcement will be made over the PA system to alert students and faculty that a tornado drill will begin. Classes will move to their assigned areas. Students should leave the classroom in a single file in a quiet and orderly manner. The teacher should follow the last student out and bring the emergency bag with the class rosters. Students should go directly to their designated area. Each teacher needs to remain with his or her class at all times. Students are to be seated as soon as possible. The crouched position, facing the wall, hands interlocked over the head, elbows to knees will be taken ONLY on direction of the area supervisor. Students will return to class on directions from the PA system or area supervisor.
