2. Today we are going to talk about safety…
What are some things we do to keep you safe at school?
Teacher: Today we are going to talk about safety. Schools are safe places and it is always our goal for our school to remain safe.  What are some of the things we do to keep you safe?
Student examples could be: Visitors sign in, we practice fire drills, tornado drills, lockdown, exit drill, keep outside doors locked, and stranger danger) You can continue some discussion about how to carry out these drills. 2

3. Why do we do drills?
Teacher:  Why do we do drills?  (fire drills, earthquake drills, lockdown drills)
Student examples could be:  To keep us safe, to practice what we should do in an emergency, to help us know what we should do, to help things run as smoothly as possible in an emergency   
Teacher:  One purpose of drills is to prepare students for life inside and out of the classroom.  These concepts are the same at school, home, the mall, after school programs, restaurants, church, or any place that you go.  These are life-long safety skills. 3

4. What do we do as a classroom when we have to do a lockdown drill?

Student examples could be: Listen to the teacher; follow directions, remain calm and silent, move away from windows and doors, etc.
Teacher: The most important things to remember are to listen to the supervising adult, follow directions, and remain as calm and silent as possible. 4

5. 5 So today we are going to practice another way…
TEACHER: So, today we are going to practice another way that we are going to be able to stay safe in school if we have an intruder in the building or on school grounds. This new way is called A.L.I.C.E. You will hear adults/staff talking about this, but this A.L.I.C.E is not a person, but a way of describing the steps we can take to keep safe. 5

6. How do you recognize someone who does not belong in our building?
Teacher: How might you recognize someone who does not belong in our building?   
Student examples could be: someone who does not have on a visitors badge or someone who is walking around the building without someone we know with them or it could be someone who gives you a funny feeling in your gut.
Teacher:  Very good. So as a reminder, students should never open a door at school to let someone into the building.  This is a hard one, because we are taught to be courteous and help others, but in school, all people who come to the building should go through the main office and check in. 6

7. Who is an intruder? 7 Teacher: Who is an intruder?
An intruder could be anyone, couldn’t it? Trust yourself and trust your gut! If you get that uncomfortable feeling in your gut when you see someone in the building or on school grounds that does not belong, please tell an adult at school right away. An example of how to do this is to find an adult you know, and tell them “I think there is someone on school grounds or in the school who should not be here”. 7

8. 8 A—ALERT: Tell everyone what is going on.
L—LOCKDOWN: Use the lockdown
procedure we already have in place.
I—INFORM: Keep telling people what is
going on.
C—COUNTER: Do what you can to stay safe.
E—EVACUATE: Get out of the building.
Teach A.L.I.C.E. concepts to students using the powerpoint provided.
                   
Teacher: Explain each letter in A.L.I.C.E. At this point take what you have learned in A.L.I.C.E. and use it to help guide this discussion. Structure your responses around the information below. With this age of student, you know it is best to keep it simple.
A- Alert: Tell everyone what is going on.
L- Lockdown: Use the lockdown procedure we do already.
I-Inform: Keep telling people what is going on.
C-Counter: Do what you can to stay safe.
E-Evacuate: Get out of the building. 8

9. Implementing A.L.I.C.E: Modified Lockdown
Remain in or return to our assigned classroom
Lock the classroom door
Staff will document attendance
Classroom instruction will continue as normal
Hall passes and restrooms will be limited
Administrators will provide direction about changing classes
Everyone should wait for further instructions
Teacher: We are now going to discuss how to implement these A.L.I.C.E. procedures in the event of a modified lockdown and then various lockdown scenarios.
Teacher: Sometimes we will have a modified lockdown drill in our school to keep someone OUT of the building, or to keep everyone in their location (classroom) because of some other situation that is not about an intruder IN our building. When that happens, it is important that you are quiet, listen to me, and remain calm. We will wait for more information (INFORM) and I will tell you what to do. (Discussion if necessary)
In a Modified Lockdown, we would:
Remain in or return to our assigned classroom
Lock the classroom door
Staff will document attendance
Classroom instruction will continue as normal
Hall passes and restrooms will be limited

12. In case of a lockdown when there is an intruder…
Where are safe places in our classroom?
LISTEN to the supervising adult, follow directions, remain as quiet and calm as possible
Teacher: In the case of a lockdown when there is an intruder, either me or an adult in the building will tell us that there is an intruder and to lockdown.  This may be over the PA system or we may hear or see something dangerous.
We will go to our identified safe place in the classroom.  Remember, we stay away from windows and doors .

Teacher: There are a couple different kinds of instructions that I may give depending on the situation. It is important that you listen and do what I say. I may say we need to barricade, evacuate, or I may tell you we are going to counter. It will depend on what I tell you to do.

What could we use to barricade the door if necessary?
If during a lockdown I tell you we are going to barricade the door, I need you to follow my directions to stay safe. This is not a time to run around or act silly, even though it may seem like what we are doing is silly. It is to keep us safe.

Teacher: If during a lockdown I tell you that we need to evacuate, you will be quiet and follow my directions. We might go out the door, or we might have to go out another way, such as through a window. Again, this might sound funny, but you must remain calm and listen to my directions. I am in charge of what we do.

Teacher: If we are to evacuate, it is important to listen to the staff member who will give you directions to a rally point location.

Teacher: If during a lockdown I tell you we are going to counter, you must listen to me very carefully. When we counter you may do what you can to protect yourself. Throw something at or run at or past any intruder.

20. Modified Lockdown
Classroom Instruction Continues. A modified lockdown occurs when there is a need for an enhanced level of safety and security for students, staff, and visitors when a low level emergency or crisis exists at or near a school.
TEACHER or SUPERVISING ADULT:
Scan the hallway and direct students to their currently assigned classrooms
Students/staff/visitors must be accounted for and placed under supervision
Lock door
Allow students to enter late
Staff must document attendance
Classroom instruction should continue
Limit hall passes
Administration will direct class changes
Everyone should wait and LISTEN for further instructions
Teacher: Now we are going to talk about a MODIFIED LOCKDOWN situation.  We are going to review the steps we need to take when a MODIFIED LOCKDOWN occurs. 20

Classroom Instruction Ceases: A LOCKDOWN occurs when imminent danger exists inside or outside the building that requires immediate LOCKDOWN of all classrooms and office doors or occupied rooms.  
TEACHER or SUPERVISING ADULT:
Scan the hallways (as you see appropriate) to check for students and direct them to a safe, secure area.
Lock the door
Cover the door window, close blinds, and turn off lights, maintain silence
Take attendance when safe to do so
Ignore alarms and bells
Make room appear unoccupied
Move students away from doors and window
Assess the situation
If it is safe to do so EVACUATE.  Direct other students that you see to join you.
If it is not safe to EVACUATE, instruct students to barricade the door and move to a safe location.
