2 SAFETY starts with YOU !   YOU create the safe school environment   YOU model safety behaviors and attitudes   YOU identify potential problems or risks   YOU could be the FIRST responder   YOU are mentally prepared to respond   YOU have an action plan ……..

3 Do you know…….   Procedures for safe guarding all students?   What to do in a Tornado Warning?   How to respond to weapons possession?   How to administer CPR or First Aid?   What to do for a CODE BLUE?   How to evacuate the Cafeteria? the school?   What’s involved in a Full Campus Evacuation?   How to respond and react to any emergency?

4 Emergency Drills   Scheduled every 4 to 5 weeks   Various times of day   First two are announced   Remainder are unannounced   State-wide Tornado Drill in February   Emergency drills, like real emergencies never happen at GOOD times!

5 When the Alarm Sounds   Respond to ALL alarms immediately   Intercom notification/warnings made in case of system test   Have emergency materials prepared and in close reach   Remain calm, collected, and focused   Be knowledgeable and prepared   Have an action PLAN !

8 Evacuate the Buildings   EVERY Adult will assist in an evacuation   Bring your class roster or roll book and Evacuation Attendance Report form   Close all windows and doors   Provide exit instructions to students   Be attentive to handicapped students   Ensure ALL students exit the classroom and adjoining areas and remain with the class   Proceed calmly but quickly to assigned evacuation area   Assist Substitute Teachers

9 Teacher Responsibilities   Know the plans and evacuation routes   Maintain control and supervision of students at all times   Account for all students   Use the Evacuation Report form to inform the Administrator of missing students   Stay focused on the task !   The ALL CLEAR will be given by an Administrator.

10 Full Campus Evacuation   Required in the event of an extremely dangerous situation or crisis   UPD will close Depot Ave and SW 6th ST   Evacuate to SW 6th Street adjacent to the PKY entrance gate   Elementary, Secondary exit via SW 6th ST gate   Baby Gator, Performing Arts, Business Office exits onto 11 th Street --> Depot Avenue --> SW 6th ST

11 Power Outage   Loss of communication systems   Remain in your classroom with students   Assess situation, i.e. weather conditions   School will NOT dismiss.   No class period changes until communicated by Administrators.   Do not permit students to use any school or cell phones during this time.

12 Severe Weather & Tornados   Tornado Watch - a first level alert - conditions are favorable for a possible tornado   Classes in portables will be moved to permanent structures   Outdoor activities will go to inside shelter   Daily schedule proceeds as normal

13 Tornado Warning AA high level alert - a tornado has been spotted in the area and the threat is now imminent SSecure classroom area PPrepare for implementation of the “Tuck and Cover” security position NNormal schedule is suspended AAwait Administrative direction

14 Code Yellow AA cautionary lock-down SSecure classroom area CClass changes are suspended SStudents remain in classroom NNormal instruction continues AAwait Administrative direction

15 Code Blue   An emergency lock-down   Secure students and classroom area   Suspend class changes & student movement   Students remain in classroom   Instruction is suspended   “ALL GOOD” signal is a WHITE sheet of paper in door window. (Very important !)   Await direction and/or intervention

16 Campus Security   Wear your ID Badges   Visitors must check in at Office and wear a Visitor Badge   Others are strangers and should be approached and directed to the Office   Report suspicious persons or activity to the Office and SRO

17 RESPONSE CHEAT SHEET   FIRST RULE – ALWAYS ACCOUNT FOR ALL YOUR STUDENTS   FIRE ALARM -- LEAVE YOUR ROOM   POWER FAILURE – STAY IN YOUR ROOM   TORNADO THREAT -- STAY IN YOUR ROOM   REAL TORNADO THREAT–   1. BRICK ROOMS ---HIDE IN YOUR ROOM   2. PORTABLE ROOMS ---EVACUATE AND HIDE IN A BRICK ROOM   “ CODE YELLOW ” -- STAY IN YOUR LOCKED ROOM,   “ CODE BLUE” – STAY; WHITE PAPER IN DOOR WINDOW IF OKAY.   MEDICAL EMERGENCY - GET OR YELL FOR HELP, CALL OFFICE, DO FIRST AID or CPR.   STRANGER OR ARMED PERSON ON CAMPUS -- CALL THE OFFICE   RIOT, BOMB THREAT, TERRORIST THREAT -- CALL THE OFFICE   OTHER DISASTERS - CHEMICAL/GAS -- EVACUATE AREA
