Media Codes Starter Narrative Visual Codes Audio Codes Genre Mode of address Language/ Technical Codes

Radio The Blind Medium – Radio often only involves hearing with no visual accompaniments, this can allow audiences to use their imagination. The Companion Medium – Radio provides a sense pf personal communication, it also offers opportunity for audience interactions through phone calls, texting, competitions and mentions. The Intimate Medium – Radio is very personal, it encourages intimacy through a direct mode of address. The Understanding Medium – This allows the audience to do other things while being engaged, something you don’t have with visual texts.

Radio Styles Presenter Led-Programs – The presenter is just as important as the music or show, who have a particular style; the shows have a clear format. Example: Chris Moyles. Live Concerts – Can be popular performers or of orchestras (often aired on Radio 3) Session Programs - Bands and artists are invited to the studio, part of the program is dedicated to a live performance, the presenter will interview the guest. Music Documentaries – Programs will be devoted to analysing the life and career of a musician. Personal Choice Programs – Example; Desert Island discs where celebrities choose their favourite music.

Radio Key Terms Zoo Format – There is a main presenter but other people also contribute, the mode of address is informal, there are jokes and chat between the participants. Magazine Programme – A genre of radio that, similar to a magazine, includes a range of features such as; music, chat, news, gossip and interviews Profile – This is how a radio station would be defined, it may include their target audience, aims and ethos. Stripping – Scheduling technique used in both TV and radio where the same program or genre program is on at the same time every day. Drive Time Programmes – Programs scheduled between 5pm and 7pm , designed for listeners who are driving home. House Style – In radio this means the style of the program which may include; jingles, presenters mode of address, content and music being played.

Radio Techniques Phone-ins – Effective & cheap way of involving the listener. Discussions – People sitting around covering a range of topics. Outside Broadcasts – Mobile studies may visit different locations and broadcast from there. Example: Radio One at Glastonbury. Drama – Radio plays or soap operas. Radio four has a regular feature named ‘The Afternoon Play’.
