2 Unit 1: Investigating the Media Examination -1 hour 30 minutes 60 marks worth 40% of final marks The topic for this exam changes each year. For you the topic is: Television Crime Drama You will take this exam in June 2012

3 Unit 2: Understanding the Media 3 Controlled assignments – completed in class: 90 marks worth 60% of final marks 2 assignments in Year 10 1 practical production in Year 11, including planning/research and an evaluation

4 Unit 2: Understanding the Media Assignments – Year 10: Assignment 1 – Introduction to the Media Print - Analysis and Design –Controlled Assessment December 2011 Assignment 2 – Cross-Media Study Advertising and Marketing - Analysis and Design –Controlled Assessment February 2012

5 Unit 2: Understanding the Media Practical Production, Research and Evaluation This work is completed in Year 11. The students will choose one of the following media platforms to do their production tasks from. Specific details can be found in Assignment Bank 3. Controlled Assessment December 2012 Moving Image Radio and Sound New and Digital Media/Web-based Technology Print Advertising and Marketing Promotion of Music

6 Some examples from Assignment Bank 3 A 120 second trailer or opening sequence (or two 60 second teaser trailers) for a feature film or television programme aimed at a specific audience. A five minute audio sample for a talk-based radio show aimed at a specific audience. A three minute music video to accompany all or part of a particular track or campaign consisting of at least three print or web-based advertisements to promote a band or artiste.

7 Parental Support All coursework now has to be completed in class, some as controlled assessments. While each assignment is being completed, it is helpful for parents to encourage students to research the topic being covered. During the Practical Production, we are grateful for parents’ help in looking after the media equipment (which they are allowed to borrow), ensuring students behave safely as, with your permission, they are allowed off-site to film during Year 11.

8 Time Out for Exam Revision After February half-term, we will take time out from doing the second assignment in order to revise for the examination. You will soon receive a letter to ask you whether you object to your child watching crime dramas in class which are classified as ’15’. Unfortunately, the choices for TV dramas broadcast before the watershed are somewhat limited. Please return the slip which will be at the bottom of the letter asap to give or refuse your permission

9 Year 10 Exam Results 2011 32 Year 10 Media Studies students took Unit 1, the GCSE Media exam, early in Year 10, June 2011 The results are below: A* - 50% (16 students achieved an A*) A*-A – 75% (8 students achieved an A) A*-B – 97% (7 students achieved a B) A*-C – 100% (1 student achieved a C)
