1 Unit G322: Key Concepts (TV Drama)
Class & Status Ethnicity – TV Drama Monday 22nd April 2013 Unit G322: Key Concepts (TV Drama)

2 Aims & Objectives Recap prior learning of areas covered so far for TV Drama. Remind you of the expectations of this exam. Go through some important areas for Class & Status SHOULD you get a question on this area of representation in the exam. Analyse the 4 Technical areas in a sequence from the BBC Three TV Drama Pramface: We will then complete a similar analysis of the representation of Ethnicity, which you will complete for homework. Review the learning. Why? So you are aware of the expectations for the Exam on May 13th for Section A (50 Marks)

3 What do you already know about
Section A of the exam?

4 When you go on to the BLOG, there is an electronic version of the Micro Features booklet you were given at the beginning of the year. It is under the page Useful Links – AS and Section A: TV DRAMA TEXTUAL ANALYSIS (50 Marks) – Resources This details the examples YOU MUST be prepared to use when addressing the area of representation.

5 This is what you will find on the BLOG Page under Class and Status -
Use phrases like “status quo” and make sure you state how an example from a technical feature helps to establish social order OR challenge it! Use phrases like “stereotype” – for example are wealthier, more aristocratic people stereotyped as snobbish or derogatory towards the lower classes. Make sure your examples are always tied into the area of representation (we will go through this on the next slide) DON’T: Spend too much time on theory – briefly mention it and move on to another Point/Piece of Evidence as this gets you more marks.

6 Make sure your examples are always tied into the area of representation (we will go through this on the next slide) YOU SHOULD try and follow a Point – Evidence – Analysis structure, for example: Point – The status quo of the Upper class being in a position of importance and occupying ‘high status roles (Newman – 2006) is represented through the use of camera in the scene. Evidence – The technical code of a low camera angle is used to represent CHARACTER to be… Analysis – This example signifies how the audience will understand this stereotype of people in power and authority….
