Conversation Help Activity Movement Participation Success What is CHAMPS?

4 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 0 - Voice Levels

Art Start - CHAMPS C - Voice Level: 0; No talking during Art Start H - Raise your hand if you have a question. Wait quietly to be acknowledged and teacher will answer. A – You will complete Art Start (written and drawing portions with DETAIL). You do not stop working until teacher starts discussion. M - Getting out of seat: (1) Sharpen pencil, (2)Kleenex. You must wait until someone has sat down before you may move. (2 for pencil sharpener, 1 for Kleenex) P – Participating: Coming in class quietly and sitting in assigned seat. Looking at paper and writing/drawing. Not talking. Completing Art Start. Not Participating: Coming in class talking. Not sitting in assigned seat. Talking to other students. Not completing task (writing/drawing). Not completing Art Start. S – Success!!

Art Start Discussion- CHAMPS C - Voice Level: 0; No talking while in transition to Art Start Discussion. H - Raise your hand if you need a question answered. A – We will stop working on our Art Start. By the end of my countdown, your pencil will be on your desk, you will be looking at the board, and your voice level is 0. This should take no longer than 15 seconds. M – Students are not allowed out of their seat during this transition. P – You are participating if your pencil is on your desk, you are looking at the board, and you are quiet. Not participating: Continue writing/drawing, not looking at board, talking. S – Success!!

Teacher-Directed Instruction- CHAMPS C - Voice Level: 0; No talking during Teacher-Directed Instruction H - Raise your hand if you need a question answered. Keep hand raised, wait quietly until acknowledged. A – Working on tasks and activities presented by the teacher. M – Students are not allowed out of their seat. P – Participating: Looking at teacher. Raising hand with something to say. Answering questions when called on or signaled to. Looking where teacher directs. Writing as directed by teacher. Not Participating: Talking to another student. Getting out of seat without permission. Looking somewhere other than where directed. Not following teacher directions. Not raising hand. Not answering when signaled. S – Success!!

Gathering Materials- CHAMPS C - Voice Level: 1; Only whisper to your neighbor if you have a question about this transition. H – Raise you hand or whisper to your neighbor. A – Students will be directed to where they will get materials and how they will proceed to get them (rows will be called). Students have 1 minute to gather all supplies needed and return to their seat quietly. M – Students are allowed out of their seat to gather materials when called upon. P – Participating: When told to move, students move quickly and quietly to gather materials and return to seat. Not Participating: Wandering around the classroom. Talking loudly or too much. Stopping at another student’s table to talk. Standing around materials for too long. S – Success!!

Independent Work - CHAMPS C - Voice Level: 1; Only whisper to your neighbor if you have a question about your assignment. Only 2 students may be involved in the conversation at a time. The conversation can last up to 2 minutes. H – Whisper to your neighbor. If your neighbor cannot answer your question, raise your hand. A – Completing the assignment. M – Students are allowed out of their seat for: (1) Pencil sharpener, (2) Kleenex. Must ask permission for: (1) Materials, (2) Restroom, (3) Come to teacher to ask question. P – Participating: Looking at paper. Doing what task requires (Drawing, painting, etc.). Talking only to help or get help. Not Participating: Talking about anything besides the assignment. Talking during movement. Wandering around classroom. Looking somewhere other than work. Not doing task. S – Success!!

Passing Out Project - CHAMPS C - Voice Level: 2; Conversation is only for the purpose of saying “excuse me,” “thank you,” and “please.” H – Raise your hand and wait quietly to be acknowledged. A – Teacher or designated student will pass out projects. M – Students should not get out of their seat unless specified to by teacher. P – Participating: Waiting quietly for your project. Starting on your project when told to begin. Not Participating: Talking to students. Turned around in seat. Out of seat without permission. S – Success!!

Passing In Project - CHAMPS C - Voice Level: 1; Conversation is only for the purpose of saying “excuse me,” “thank you,” and “please.” H – Raise your hand and wait quietly to be acknowledged. A – Students will pass their papers to the next person and so on in the direction the teacher indicates. Last person at the row will have all papers in a pile straightened up and leaves them at the end of the row to be collected. M – Students should not get out of their seat unless specified to by teacher. P – Participating: Students collect and pass papers as indicated. Talking only as above. Paying attention so everyone gets the papers in quickly. Not Participating: Talking without a reason given above. Throwing papers to the next person. Getting up and collecting papers from each person in your row. Not paying attention, so others don’t get their papers turned in. S – Success!!

Tests - CHAMPS C - Voice Level: 0; No talking. H – Raise your hand and wait quietly to be acknowledged. A – Work on written test. When finished with test, sit quietly and complete 2nd assignment (if one is given). M – Students should not get out of their seat. P – Participating: Looking at paper. Writing or doing what task requires. Not talking. Not leaving seat for any reason. Not Participating: Talking to another student. Getting out of seat. Not looking at paper. Not working on task. S – Success!!

Cleanup - CHAMPS C - Voice Level: 2; Conversation is only for the purpose of saying “excuse me,” “thank you,” and “please.” H – Raise your hand and wait quietly to be acknowledged. A – Students clean up materials using the procedures the teacher has given. M – Students may get out of their seat to put away materials when row is called. P – Participating: Students move quickly and quietly when row is called to put away materials. Students put materials back where they belong. Not Participating: Talking without a reason given above. Not putting materials away in proper location. Talking during movement. S – Success!!
