Technical Support Activities in EP-ADO-PO Summary and feedback from EYETS Plan for the coming months

EYETS Summary Ensure safety inside ATLAS EYETS covered the period Dec. 5th,2016 to April 30th,2017 19 weeks + 2 weeks of CERN closure Ensure safety inside ATLAS Safety shifts Risk assessments IMPACTs approval SLIMOS Sniffers maintenance Opening & Closing of the experiment 10 major shielding parts 8 large detectors (100t to 1000t) About 7 weeks / 15-20 ind. Main activities of TC team Coordination of all underground activities Meetings with systems Scheduling IMPACTs approval Eng. On Duty (EOD) Support to detector installation & maintenance BME & BMG Scaffolding and access Cabling Rack cooling DSS maintenance

EYETS organization Several teams are committed to this process on a daily basis Technical team Up to 3 engineers and 12 technicians, from ADO-PO and ATLAS Institutes Safety team 1 safety shifter (design office + Slimos), Lexglimos & deputy RPE team 1 RPE on shift to measure parts and environment Cabling team 1 engineer (ADO-PO) + technicians (Users) Coordination 2 Facility Coordinators, 2 Safety approvers, 1 Eng. On duty = person on shift to follow-up activity coordination at P1 3 to 6 crane drivers CERN group supports, Systems experts and technicians 1400 IMPACT requests treated on the period

Manpower assigned to the Technical Support Dec. 2016 – June 2017 Supervision/operations Michel Raymond (≈ 50%) Logistics Francisco Limia-Conde (≈ 20%) Mechanics Gevorg Akhperjanyan ≈ 70% Christian Leboube Louis Rose-Dulcina Armen Yandyan + Alain Bode (EP-DT) ≈ 65% Electro-technics Nicolas Fisher Frédéric Rosset Cédric Sordé EYETS Raphael Vuillermet Joffrey Malaquin Jamie Pinnell François Garnier (EP-DT) Manu Alves (LAL/IN2P3) Sergey Yukhimchuk (Dubna) Dmitrii Liubimtcev (Dubna) Andrey Pluzhnikov (Dubna) Mikhail Kuznetsov (Dubna) Resources on Technical Support  about 8 men/year in the last 7 months (including Opening/Closing)

Opening & closing activities Side A Side C 1- Forward shielding craned to surface: 10 parts (65t to 97t) 2 trucks (55t each) 2- Big Wheels moved outward Side A Side C 3- Light trucks lowering and positioning 4- ECT movement

Opening & closing activities ECTs, Small Wheels, End cap calorimeters are moved on air pads, with friction strength of 1-2% Movement is controlled within a few mm, for objects from 100t up to 1000t. Scaffolding are build in between detectors to provide access for users. Full opening operation performed in 18 days, partially in 2 shifts Side A Side C

Opening & closing activities The closing operation is always longer, in particular because of Forward region activities that slow down the process 7.5 weeks including the replacement of 15 TGC chambers on Big Wheels and EO gas leak repair Careful positioning of Barrel Area detectors thanks to 2 methods ADEPO = home made system based on Bcams (developed by Brandeis university) Classic survey measurement No correction applied in calorimeter software before the Run ! Difference in Y are caused by UX15 movement Vertical alignment in between detectors is about 0.1 to 0.2 mm Very efficient organization of cleaning of the Barrel Toroid 1 day with 8 teams in parallel

Support to detector installation Intervention on ECT air pads Temporary supporting of ECT (about 320 tons each!) Replacement of air pads and air valves BMG installation (in sector 13) Tooling fabrication Installation of 12 chambers Removal/installation of BME on both sides Access consolidation Modification of S13 elevator Frequent requests for change on calorimeter access Support to CSC chamber repair Access modification in real time

Support to infrastructure maintenance Rack cooling Hoses replacement (to be continued) Sniffer maintenance Module maintenance Pipe cleaning and test DSS maintenance and consolidation LAr rack installation Cabling Completion of AFP Replacing pneumatic pipes for gas system Various cabling activities in USA15 Pulling of 3 cables in SDX1 Pulling one cable for LAr cryo from USA15 to UX15 44 cables for Ga-As detectors Pulling 4 cables to cameras Pulling cables from the TPX rack in USA15 to the device Timpix3 sensor List is not exhaustive

Technical support : Work on going From May 2017, technical activities have started out of UX15: Some fabrications Tooling for NJD assembly AFP support (plates + table) JD Lifting frame consolidation Test bench for movement system To improve JD traction cylinder operation

Distribution of activities More than 50 % is related to EYETS Plot is based on identified time ≈ 88%

+ sniffers maintenance LHC schedule 2017 + sniffers maintenance

Goals for the next 6 months Technical support to Operation & Systems Tile calorimeter : repair of Test beam Table (on going) Machining of remaining parts for AFP (on going) Sniffers maintenance (at TS2, module preparation in Sept. and Oct.) Rack cooling and support to OPM technical tasks Water leak detection in SDX1 Follow-up of safety in buildings (TSOs) AFP spare station Technical support to Upgrade projects Modification of the 2nd JD lifting frame : load test NJD and NSW tooling 1st NJD assembly is planned on August 2nd NJD assembly is planned on Sept/Oct Movement system for NSW : parts manufacturing

Goals for the next 6 months Be ready for YETS (Baseline 11th Dec. 2017 – 25th March 2018) Opening / closing Maintenance of movement system + a few upgrades Modification of JD-C traction cylinder valves Continuation of the effort on procedures Scaffolding Check of the package to optimize construction time and space occupancy in the trench Preliminary schedule : changes are expected, mainly in the closing period Opening Closing Access to calorimeters Xmas break
