1 Technical Support Activities in PH-ADO-PO
Sept to December 2010

2 Summary of recent activities
The current shut down started on October 8th, 2008 Today the closing of the shafts is on going UX15 will be back to restricted mode ≈ September 20th, 2009 Nearly 12 months with activity mainly focused on Cavern needs Opening and closing of Atlas (7 months, not full time !) Good improvement in the process, first time the shielding is fully installed Installation & removing of standard access (>1.5 month) Good improvement in the Barrel gap area Big wheels : support to optical fiber replacement (>1 month) Calorimeters : shielding and access Muons : Support to barrel chamber repair, EEL, EES rails,… JD ring segments modification, locking devices, … The list is not exhaustive, but the amount of work that has been done and the level of quality and efficiency we reached is very satisfactory The forthcoming tasks will be rather different, a new challenge is to adapt ourself to it, and be prepared for the next shut down

3 Main activities and objectives
Technical Support and operation for ATLAS Run “very draft” schedule (from Mike Lamon’s talk on August 27th) 1 month pilot & commissioning (from 450 GeV to 3.5 TeV) 3 month 3.5 TeV 1 month step-up Access ? 5 month 4-5 TeV 1 month ions (end of November 2010) According this plan : no opening in 2010 ! BUT we have to be ready to open at any time with a short notice (about 2 weeks) Really depends on the behaviour of the machine During the run : Participation to Safety : TSO, RPA, RPE, Patrols… Some Stand by service is needed, that will affect our organization We have to be prepared to this and react positively… as usual ! Technical support to various sub-systems, in case of access Magnet activity Support to safety system

4 Main activities and objectives
Maintenance and upgrade of the existing movement system Yearly maintenance of hydraulics components Assembly, start and commissioning of a second hydraulics system for movement A few improvements to be done Scaffolding improvement New folding bridges under study : manufacturing 2nd half of 2010 Round scaffolding Manufacture of various devices (drawings from Design Office) Platforms (sector 13, top of ECTs) Barrel and forward platforms (related to EE muon chambers installation) More generally, all tooling necessary to open, close or access in Atlas Organization and supervision of the storage in surface buildings Support to various activities, in agreement with PH division

5 Policy (unchanged) The sub-section is a team with good relationship inside the ADO-PO section  strong link to be developed with the 2 other sub-sections : Engineering and Safety People are assigned to a project in order to have a good follow up and a better knowledge of what they have to do. But Priorities are defined every week and a list of tasks is produced in agreement with these priorities. Technicians will work on various sub-projects The technical responsibility as well as the organization of the tasks belong to the project leaders of the various sub-systems.
