Additional muon stations for the Upgrade of the Elevator Regions in the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer. Installation scenario, status on the installation tools Contents: 1.Insertion in sector 13. Situation on sides A and C. 2.BM installation scenario 3.BOS installation scenario 4.Information needed for the design of supports and installation tools Elevator muon chamber Workshop 01/08/2012 Wim Van Emden, Alexander Seletskiy, Giancarlo Spigo, Tatiana Klioutchnikova

Situation on side C No HF truckWhenHow long BW open, JF out27/03/2013 1 days max. ECT moved to USA04/04/201310 hours SW closed, truck up14/08/2014 ECT closed, truck away 21/08/2014Until BW-C closing on 12/09/2014 Side C long opening for the IBL installation will not allow much space for the chamber insertion in sector 13. 01/08/20122

Situation on side C Most of time the situation on side C is the following: End-Cap Toroid moved laterally to USA side on the light truck and Extended Calorimeter in long opening on the heavy truck. In this situation very complex manipulations are necessary to bring the BOS chamber into the trench in sector 13. Heavy truck has a connection beam between the feet so that only separate parts ( MDT or RPC ) can pass under this beam. For the full assembly MDT+2RPC the insertion is preferable at the moment when there is no truck in front of the forward trench. Installation scenario allows only one precise moment for the lowering and insertion of BOS chamber on side C: 01/08/20123

Situation on side A No HF truckWhenHow long BW open, JF out EEL sect.15 instal. 27/03/20135 days ECT open, top platform installed 04/04/2013Until closing 04/08/4014 Other? ECT closed, truck away 08/2014Until BW-A closing on Sept. 2014 Standard opening on side A leaves more possibilities for the chamber installation.

Situation on side A On side A the platform installed on top of End-Cap Toroid allows to lower down BOS and BM chambers with transport and installation frames using a surface crane. Then the chambers can be transferred to the floor of the forward trench with help of the cavern crane. There is enough space on USA side for this operation. 01/08/20125

BM insertion to sector 13 Worst case – side C Lowering down BM chamber with lorry using 20t surface crane Rotate and move below the truck 01/08/20126

BM insertion to sector 13 Hand crane Temporary support BM chamber mounted with the help of the hand crane and put on the profile extension installed on the temporary supports. The lorry with BM chamber can be moved to the elevator zone on the profiles installed in advance. Inside sector 13 the chamber in rotated and fixed to the horizontal position. 01/08/20127

BM chambers installation in elevator region Installation Sequence Step by Step Wim Van Emden Step 1 : Install rail, brackets and junction and survey the rail within +/- 1mm. 01/08/20128

Step 2: Remove the beam clamping and in order to create space for the installation lorry, slide back the rail extension to the ‘parking position’ 01/08/20129

Step 3: Prepare the lifting procedure: The lifting beam will be supported on the voussoirs. Attach the slings through the lifting beam, pallonier and the installation lorry. Lifting Beam Pallonier 01/08/201210

Step 4: Lift the lorry in vertical position and rotate the chamber in horizontal position. Slide the rail of the extended part backwards in order to avoid a clash with the chamber during rotation. Extension 01/08/201211

Step 5: Also for the fixed rail, before rotation of the chamber slide the rail and center pin backwards. Step 6: Center the rail of the lorry with the connection pin and slide the chamber on the rails. Note: at this time the lorry is the additional support of the rail. 01/08/201212

Step 7: Push/pull the chamber on the rail support and disconnect the rails of the lorry and support. For the lowering-down of installation lorry, the elevator could be used. Step 8: The lift/lorry goes down. Now, the extensional rail support must be connected again with the fix rail support. The max. estimated survey accuracy : +/-1mm Fixed rail support Extensional rail support 01/08/201213

Step 9: Move back the extensional rail support from the parking position to the fix rail support connect the junction. Now the chamber can be moved to run position 01/08/201214

01/08/201215 Design of support bracket and definition of distance between rails

Optimization of support bracket number Minimum number of supports is 6 pairs of brackets. If 2 additional pairs are added there is more possibilities to move the chamber in different positions to access services on BML chambers 01/08/201216

BOS chambers installation in elevator region Alexandre Seletskiy Two possible scenarios: 1.Installation in one block: MDT and 2 RPC fixed together on the same frame 2.Separate installation of MDT and 2 RPC chambers into one frame. Possibility to bring RPCs and insert it later. 01/08/201217

Scenario 1: Installation in one block: MDT and 2 RPC fixed together on the same frame Rails are installed on adjustable brackets in advance. Rails are surveyed in position +/- 1mm. Assembly of 3 chambers is brought in the transport frame. The height of the wheels should be adjustable in order to put rail of the frame parallel to the surveyed rails. Then the rails can be connected together and the chambers slide into it’s positions defined by stoppers. Advantages scenario 1: Installation in one peace Easier adjustment of rails without weight of the chamber, more space for installation and adjustment Disadvantage scenario 1: All the chambers should be ready for the moment of installation. The date for the installation is fixed for the side C. 01/08/201218

Scenario 2: Separate installation of MDT and 2 RPC chambers into one frame. Side A a)The frame with MDT is moved on wheels to the final position. There the weight is transferred to the brackets. The brackets allow the positioning adjustment. Final tuning can be done inside the frame if necessary. b) RPCs can be brought with the light transport frame and installed into the frame later 01/08/201219

Scenario 2: Separate installation of MDT and 2 RPC chambers into one frame. Side C On side C it is possible to slide the frame with chambers between the air pads below the truck. Advantage scenario 2: Possibility to install RPCs later when the frame is in place Disadvantages scenario 2: More difficult to adjust positioning of the chamber, less space for the operations Design of the frame more complex Second transport frame is needed for RPC installation 01/08/201220

4. Information needed for the design of supports and installation tools 1.Agreement on the run position for BOS (MDT and RPC) chambers 2.Dimensions and frame design for the RPCs 3.Decision on the installation scenario for the BOS 4.Information concerning on-chamber services and alignment equipment 01/08/201221
