3 VAX Zones Overview Issues Status
Consists of beamline components between experiment and Q1 plus gas injection system in IR1L, IR2R, IR5L Part of the experimental vacuum sector, used for pumping and venting sectors (ex.LHCb) Issues Very limited access in ATLAS and CMS Limited installation window between triplet repairs and machine sector cooldown Co-activity with survey, triplet repairs and warm magnet commissioning Integration conflicts with survey have led to modifications of injection and pumping lines in IR1 and 5 Status 2 fully complete (IR5R, IR8R) 2 commissioning this week (IR2R, IR8L) 2 installation in progress (IR1L, IR5L) 2 to be done (IR1R, IR2L) Beam line components IR5L VAX zone in IR1L LEMIC 16 X 07 Experimental Beampipes - R.Veness

4 ATLAS VI installation and Alignment
Installed VI was integrated in the PIXEL package in SR1 from Dec ’06 The PIXEL and VI were installed together at the end June ’07 … and aligned The VI was nominally centered within the PIXEL package during integration After installation it was re-surveyed, then re-positioned using the specially developed laser alignment system LEMIC 16 X 07 Experimental Beampipes - R.Veness PIXEL and VI installation

5 ATLAS VA Installation (x2)
VA-A side and C-side installed VA-A Installed from C-side, passing through the ID bore VA-C installed from an extension to the PIXEL installation scaffolding VA-A in the ID bore LEMIC 16 X 07 Experimental Beampipes - R.Veness VA-C in transport box during positioning VA-A in the Barrel – endcap gap

6 Installation Status: VT
VT installed A and C sides VT support rails installed in JTT and tested July ‘07 VT chambers inserted inside JTT, but not mounted on rails – just resting on the JTT bore LEMIC 16 X 07 Experimental Beampipes - R.Veness VT and support rails in JTT Working platform for VT and TAS operations

7 ATLAS Remote flanges and Interface plates
TAS flange A and C installed Mechanical components mounted on the TAS absorber, mechanical and leak detection successfully completed Interface plate A and C installed Plate positioned on beam axis with aid of TS-SU During this operation, it was found that both monoblocks (and hence TAS) are further than nominal from the IP: 29mm on A-side and 21 mm on C-side Actions As TAS is a machine element, F.Butin is circulating an NCR for approval with the recommendation to ‘use as-is’ Lateral alignment of the TAS is also required – F.Butin will coordinate Preparation for leak testing of TAS and remote flange Installation of interface plate Positioning of interface plate LEMIC 16 X 07 Experimental Beampipes - R.Veness

8 ATLAS VAX Sectors IR1L installed (A-side) IR1R (C-side) Cabling
Equipment between TAS and Q1 installed and leak tested Gas injection lines installed, but will be modified due to interface issues with survey Gas purifier box to be installed on HO structure, A-side, level 6 (meeting area) week 46 IR1R (C-side) Equipment here to be installed from week 43 Cabling Additional cabling for Gas Injection and VAX bakeout will be routed into the ATLAS cavern Gas injection lines installed over the Q1 in IR1L LEMIC 16 X 07 Experimental Beampipes - R.Veness

9 Connection of VI to VA VA-A, VI, VA-C connected
All three chambers were bolted together on 27/8/07 Pumping equipment was positioned below the TE, and connected with long (~8m) flexible hoses Chambers pumped overnight to reduce pressure background, then leak tested No leaks (on flanges) with sensitivity of ~2x10-10 mbar.l.s-1 Pumping equipment as installed LEMIC 16 X 07 Experimental Beampipes - R.Veness Pumping line on VA (non-IP end) Connection of VI to VA
