Aim: Describe the key inventions and improvements that furthered the Industrial Revolution

Inventions Spur Industrialization Inventions now revolutionized Britain’s industry Textile Industry was first to be transformed 1733: John Kay made shuttle that sped back and forth on wheels 1764: James Hargreaves invented a spinning wheel (Spinning Jenny) Allowed one spinner to work eight threads at a time 1769: Richard Arkwright invented the water frame to produce the spinning mule Made thread that was stronger & finer 2

Improvements in Transportation Steam engine stemmed search for a cheap source of power 1765: James Watt figured a way to make the steam engine work faster without burning less fuel 1807: Robert Fulter built a steamboat called the Clermont Water transportation improved creation of canals (man made waterways) in England 1800’s: British roads improved thanks to John McAdam Equipped road beds with layer of stones for drainage Wagons could travel on roads without sinking 3

The Railway Age Begins Steam-driven machinery powered English factories in the late 1700’s 1821: Engineer George Stephenson began working on the world’s first railroad line 1830: The Liverpool-Manchester Railway opened officially which was an immediate success Effects of locomotive: Gave manufacturers a cheap way to transport materials Created hundred of new jobs Boosted England’s agriculture/fishing industries Encouraged country people to take distant jobs 4
