Steam engine was created by James Watt in 1765 Figured out a way to make steam engine work faster while burning less fuel Key power source of the Industrial Revolution; led to expansion of all other industries Water transportation Steam also propelled boats Robert Fulton built a steamboat, the Clermont In England, water transportation improved with the creation of canals Mid 1800’s, 4,250 miles of inland channels throughout England helped reduce the cost of transporting raw materials and finished goods

6 Road transportation John McAdam, Scottish engineer
McAdam changed the way roads were built On top layer of road, he placed a smooth layer of crushed rock This allowed wagons to travel on roads during rainy weather

7 Railroad transportation
George Stephenson began work on the first railroad line (1821) Railroad had four major effects Stimulated industrial growth Created new jobs for railroad workers and miners (iron and coal) Transport agricultural and fishing products to distant cities Encouraged country people to take jobs in the city
