Industrial Revolution  A shift in the late 1700s through the1800s in Europe and America from farming and hand made goods to manufacturing by machines in factories  Before the industrial revolution, the method of production for cotton items was the cottage industry  Cottage industry: in-home production of thread and cloth  A series of technological advances moved production of cotton goods from the cottages (homes) to factories (spinning jenny, the water powered loom, steam engine, factory system)

Industrial Revolution

 Began in Great Britain in the 1780s and took several decades to spread to other Western nations  Changes in agriculture practices led to an increase food supply and family income  Population grew giving Britain a plentiful supply of labor  Britain had a ready supply of money (capital) to invest in new industrial machines and factories  Britain had plenty of natural resources (water, coal and iron ore)  A supply of markets gave British manufacturers a ready outlet for their goods
