1 Industrial Revolution:
the factors of production!

2 Great Britain industrializes 1st
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, life in Great Britain rapidly changed as the Industrial Revolution got under way. There were 5 Major geographic and social reasons why it happened in Great Britain first before spreading to the rest of the world WHY???!!!

3 Industrialization changed Great Britain!
Thanks to new inventions Great Britain went from Cottage Industry, where goods were mainly produced in the home; to manufactured goods. Industrialization –the process of changing from hand made goods to machine made goods (manufactured goods) People went from working at home to working in factories & earned WAGES! 1750 England – the first Population shifts: rural to urban migration Rural = country Urban = city Cottage Industry Industrial Manufacturing

4 Great Britain goes from this…

5 To this…

6 What’s needed to Industrialize?
Political stability Factors of Production: Land, labor and capital & entrepreneurship New technology Transportation: Great Britain had (rivers, lakes, oceans, railroads, highways etc.) Natural resources (coal and iron ore) Raw materials or access to raw materials (cotton, sugar, tobacco, etc) There are 5 REASONS why Britain industrialized 1st…

7 Factors of Production defined:
Capital Goods - a man-made factor of production used by labor in making other products. Includes tools, factories, machines, etc. Labor - any form of human effort exerted in production. Also called human resources. Natural resources - productive resources that are provided by nature - such as land, air, water, forests, coal, iron ore, oil, and minerals. Entrepreneurship - the individual responsible for combining and organizing natural resources, capital goods, and labor to produce a good or service. Role could involve assuming the risks of business failure and/or providing the creativity and managerial skills necessary for production to take place.

8 Reason #1 Britain had a large labor force due to the…
The Agricultural Revolution More food = more people The Enclosure Movement – landowners started fencing off their lands. Smaller farmers were forced off of their lands and went to the cities to find work. More people looking for work became the labor force necessary for industrialization.

9 Reason #2 & Great Britain had plenty of:
Capital – money to invest in technology, factories, or machines. & Entrepreneurs – people (middle class) that were willing to take their money and find ways to make a profit

10 Scarcity- Nearly all resources are scarce, meaning there is a limited supply available to meet unlimited wants. In a free and open market, the more scare a resource is, the more expensive it is Reason #3 River systems: Britain had rivers that connected major cities together, and water that could be used to power factories. Natural Harbors Natural Resources: land -coal and iron ore deposits.

11 Reason #4 The British Empire had
Colonies that would provide raw materials (like cotton from the southern colonies in America.) Markets: people in their colonies that were willing to buy manufactured products (goods made by machines).

12 External Combustion Engine – using steam to create energy.
Reason #5 New technology allowed Great Britain to change the way people lived Steam engine (James Watt) Railroads Spinning jenny Puddling (Iron) James Watt External Combustion Engine – using steam to create energy.
