College Credit Plus Welcome Students and Parents to: Information Session

What is College Credit Plus? Unique opportunity for highly motivated students in grades 7-12 to get a jump start on their future Allows academically qualified students to enroll in courses at any participating college or university in Ohio

What is College Credit Plus? Students earn BOTH high school and college credit No cost to the student for the course or instructional material All courses are taught by qualified college instructors College Credit Plus students have access to Northwest State’s student academic support services

What is College Credit Plus? Classes can be taken on campus, online or at the high school (in some cases) Classes are transferable After graduation, students can choose to complete their associate degree from Northwest State, or transfer their credits to a four-year college or university

The College Difference Structured Environment Daily schedule is routine Day begins and ends as a school group Attend five days a week Few course choices Mandatory attendance High School Manage Your Own Time Routine changes every day Classes may be online, face- to-face or combination Not all instructors take attendance It may appear that you have “free time” College

The College Difference Parents & Teachers Direct interventions from parents Teachers hold students accountable Expectations are repeated often and reminders are issued High School Student Responsible Students are treated as adults Students initiate contact with their instructor if assistance is needed Students are expected to follow the course syllabus on their own College

The College Difference Homework Counts Grades are given for most assigned work Consistent good homework may raise your grade Testing is frequent over small sections High School Tests & Papers Count Tests are infrequent and often cover large amounts of material Review sessions are rare Students must organize their study topics and prepare to be tested Make-up tests may not be available College

The College Difference Minimal Outside Work Assigned readings are often done in class Discussion is teacher led Listening in class is enough Lessons are read and reviewed High School Significant Outside Work For every hour you spend in class, you should plan on three hours of outside studying and assignments (For a 3 credit hour class, you are in class for about 2.5 hours, which equals 7.5 hours of studying.) College

The College Difference Effort Counts Students can improve their grades with perfect attendance and extra credit High School Results Count Students’ grades are the result of their performance on tests and papers College

Other Considerations You are responsible for getting to and from campus How might this effect your GPA and class rank? Even if your high school delays or cancels, you are still expected to show up for your college classes* * NSCC only cancels when there are level 3 snow emergencies across the five-county area

What Kind of Learner are You? Northwest State offers several options in the College Credit Plus program, so students can take courses that best meet their learning style. On Campus Online Hybrid At the High School

What Kind of Learner are You? On Campus (Face-to-Face) Traditional classroom setting similar to high school experience Classes offered at a set day & time Instructor leads the class in lecture, group projects & other activities Classes average 18 students

College Credit Plus Class Types Online All content, assignments, projects, discussions & tests online No scheduled class meeting times Students work on the coursework when their schedule permits Online classes still have due dates & deadlines * Students interested in taking an online class must pass the Online Learning Readiness Assessment (OLR) prior to registering for classes

What Kind of Learner are You? Hybrid Combine the best of online & face-to-face Students & instructors meet fewer hours More coursework & activities online Gives students some freedom of pace Offers the convenience of online learning combined with the value of personal interaction & the campus experience

What Kind of Learner are You? High School Some high schools offer college-level coursework in their building Courses taught by qualified college instructor Offered within the typical high school day but contain college-level curriculum
